Is 3M 4200 thicker than 5200?

I'm getting ready to seal the cap back on the hull on my bass boat restore, and I'm noticing how runny 5200 is from doing other things. I bought two tubes of black 4200 to seal the joint between cap/hull but if its as runny as 5200 its just going to be a big failing mess. Is 4200 what I want for this? Thanks!!

As far as I know, they are both about the same consistency except the 5200 is more permanent. Sorry I can't offer more, I'm sure you'll get your answer shortly.

Oh I hope not. I really figured that's what I wanted to use but after watching the 5200 goop down from my livewell fittings theres no way it'd work upside down on the underside of the cap gap. Wonder if windshield eurethane would be a better choice?

4200 can be removed with some effort, 5200 needs to be cut away

windshield urethane such as sika-flex needs to be heated to dispense, however has consistency similar to 4200.

Hmmmm. So what's best to use to seal this gap? I just know if I use 4200 and it's as runny as 5200 its just going to drip down the hull and not seal a damn thing. And I don't have the resources to flip the boat over. :)

Hello Fisher ..

There are two types of 5200/4200. Regular and Fast Cure.

Regular 5200 is like you suggested..runny. Fast cure 5200 is thicker and will hold more like standard caulk.

4200 Fast cure is probably what you want for a hull-deck joint. You can go with 5200 Fast cure if you like but its going to be a pain if you ever want to get the seam apart ever again.

Regular 5200 is used for underwater through hull fittings that will be basically permanent. Its Not used to fill gaps.

Hope this helps :)

Re: Is 3M 4200 thicker than 5200?

I used 5200 a few years ago for the same purpose and it was a nightmare. I got it where I needed it to be and then it ran down the hull like pancake syrup. I used a few passes to keep getting it where I needed it until it stayed there. I also kept running around the boat tooling the joint and catching the runs before it got away from me. Like I said - a nightmare. After all was done, I had the unenviable task of cleaning the hull - what a PITA!! I think I even posted at the time about it.

Thanks for the input guys. I've got 4200 fast cure so hopefully itll stay put. I can imagine it was a nightmare if you used regular 5200. That stuff gets everywhere!! Thanks again!
