hey guys. iam in trouble now. went to remove the oil filter on my 350 mercnitemare and it decentergrated on me and now alls thats left is the top. its on there tight as can be. i,ve tried a screwdriver and mallet, to no avail. tried prying down on one side to get vise grips on the top to bang on but the top is a lot harder material than the sides.plus the access is minimal but can get to it. and yes, i was probably turning it the wrong way. thanks for the help. tim

How a bout a picture of what you have there and what's left of it? So we can give you some options here...

Re: in a jam.

the top stamping has holes in it. get a cylinder spanner wrench, or use a screwdriver and a hammer.

make sure your turning it lefty-loosy and not righty-tighty

how long has it been since you changed oil that the filter disintegrated?

If you break something no worries. just unbolt the adapter, put in a new one then you are as good as new.
But a spanner wrench should work fine.

Re: in a jam.

I was actually thinking at first... sharp cold chisel and hammer and take a bite into the filter in the direction it needs to be removed... if you are looking at it from the bottom of the filter (the end not touching the engine) . it removes counter clockwise
lefty loosey righty tighty

If it were mine I would stick a bar/rod in the center hole and pull. Then put a new base on it. I dont see that you have much to work with.
Do you have easy access to the underside?

Re: in a jam.

you need to get a big heavy screwdriver and start trying to bend the flange down and that will relieve the stress on the threaded post.

Re: in a jam.

rebar to break the filter housing , then replace filter housing or
pull engine to remove remaining material
