idle trouble

Hey guys, I am new to the forum. Tons of great info on here. I am new to outboard motors but not to turning wrenches so I have some mechanical knowledge.

Ok here is my problem. I have a 1977 55hp Evinrude. I have taken the carbs apart 3 times and cleaned them with carb cleaner and small pieces of wire. I replaced the needle and seat. Also readjusted the floats.

When I get the boat in the water and lift the warm up lever and choke it she fires up but the rpms shoot up to around 3,000. I will push the lever down slowly and it will sputter and die. If I am quick I can get it in gear and it runs perfect 1/4, 1/2, and full throttle perfect.

I have a fuel pump rebuild kit on the way to see if that will help. What do you guys recommend.

Thanks everybody.

Re: idle trouble

After you rebuild the fuel pump do a link & sync in the steps given in your manual.

Re: idle trouble

Do you happen to have a link to a thread on how to perform this? Or a brief explanation? I do not have a manual.

Thanks again.

Re: idle trouble

I am having the exact same problem with my 96 Johnson 88spl. I also just rebuilt my carbs. I have the seloc manual for my motor but I don't see anything pertaining to link n sync. If anyone can describe this process it will help more than one person.

Re: idle trouble

link & sync Is different with different motors. This is why you need to get the omc service manual for your motor. Try ebay.

You can do a search here for link and sync. You can probably find the instructions for an engine very similar to yours.
