I'm assuming both, lol I thought I dl pics. Any idea what fuel to 2 cycle oil it takes? Also i have only operated newer boats, why are there two throttle levers? Is one to put it in gear while the other is for the throttle?
Mercury did use an Insulator Blanket inside the Cowl Wrap on a lot of motors. All the ones I ever saw were inside a Plastic Envelope. Of course over time, Plastic degrades and the material inside will come out.
Any Pics?
So I got the fuel hooked up but no spark to the plugs, any advice?

Could the router button be rusted or stuck? Or does it even have one, it looks like my old chevy distributor

As I posted in Post #11 The Gas-Oil ratio was 20:1 back in the Day, but Mercs from that era are all anti-friction bearing design, can can use TCW-3 at 50:1, but some will argue to use 24:1

There is only 1 Throttle Lever, the other is, as you say, the Shift Lever.

That is a Magneto Ignition, and it probably needs some TCL. There should be some stuff about it in the Service(3rd party) Manual that I gave a link to.

Well the Corpse of the Sound Blanket is visible, and likely provided some Material that the Nest is constructed of. Motor was likely stored on its side for a while
I suggest full Precautions against the Hanta Virus be taken, when working around that mess.

So I got the evenrude running, it sounds great, any idea why it's smoking so much? Or is this normal cuz I put to much oil in mixed in the gas?

Is it normal for the propeller to spin randomly when in neutral?
There is a bit of Friction in the Propshaft Bushings so sometimes the Prop will rotate a bit when running in Neutral. When in the water the water provides a bit more Resistance,
Now you are going to drop the Lower Unit and replace the Water Pump Impeller as you did Damage to it, running like you did.

Really? I only started it for about 25 seconds most, I had it in water previously but the container I had the prop in fell when I reved it up since bricks were the only thing holding it up.

Shoot, I had planned on changingnthe impeller any how. I ordered one for it and the mercury. What do you think would stop the fire from getting to the pistons of the mercury? All the wires look good, almost brand new.I changed out a couple hoses, I know that don't have anything to do with the spark but everything looks new in there. You think it's the rotary button? Maybe I can sand the leads and patch it up?

Also do you know what the rubber grommets are called on the evenrude that look like there where the motor mounts ought to be? And where 8 can get them cheap at?

Weak Magnets in the Magneto, bad Condenser, Something grounding out. I hope it is not the Rotor. If memory serves me right, it is part of the Distributor Shaft, and no longer in Production, though some Dealers might have NOS, on their shelves. Any Corrosion should be removed,

The rotor is not part of the shaft.-----It is no longer available.----The parts for these magnetos are big $$$.-----But they are well made.----Lots of used parts available.

The newer distributers were like that.------I have more than 1 early Mercury magnetos and the rotor is a separate item.----Even on the 6 cylinder motors it was separate with input from 2 coils to the rotor
