I tried that roll method once and after sanding for 2 days I bought an HVLP spray gun. I haven't looked back since to those sagging drippy days.

Yah, I'm planning on going with a spray job for the Chieftain but will try the roll and roll method for the Kingfisher. Hopefully, it'll go okay.

I think I covered about four square feet before I said enough with the roll and roll method:frusty:
And that's up here in the GWN where it's cool and no humidity, can't imagine trying it in Florida

Oh jeez Pat don't go getting him all confused now  There's no angle on the bottom, just a 15 degree on top but only on the sides of an OB transom that goes under the caps.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse. MY lower track on MY boat wasn't a 90 degree angle. I set the transom in the track and only one edge was touching the bottom. It was close but there was a gap.I wasn't implying he go after the bottom. My point was that we have all goofed when cutting our wood for our boats. I'm sure mine would have been fine if left alone but I just had to get it to fit flush. Because I have a bit of a problem you see.

Hey guys, what rollers do I need for the roll & roll painting technique?

I think Woodonglass recommends either the foam or a 1/4 inch nap roller. If using the 1/4...I would recommend using Sherwin Williams roller covers and before using them wrap some blue masking tape around the entire roller at least once. When you pull the tape off you will pull any lint off the roller. You might want to do this twice to make sure it is lint free. The blue tape is as agressive as i would get on any roller. The old white masking tape might just pull the good nap off the roller. I have found that the SW rollers are the best as far as lint free goes.

Okay, I found the OTF instructions again. It says"starts" to pool.

I'm figuring that it really means that when the sealant is uniformly pooling on the surface and not just in some spots. Then we gently remove the excess and let it dry for 3 days.

After that, apply 2 coats of full strength spar varnish.

That IS the way to use the OTF to seal wood.
Thanks WoG for stopping by my dry dock. Much appreciated! :)

We're in a lull right now. Stopped working a couple hours ago and we're just waiting for it to cool down again before heading back out.

So as I understand it, we can flip that transom over and do the other side tonight, THEN wait the 3 days, right?

Okay guys, I have a little time to bring you up to date while I'm waiting to go back outside.

I'm in. All in! Not just the transom, but everything! :D

Over the last few weeks, I've recalculated, re-planned and have been surreptitiously acquiring "stuff" to finish the Kingfisher! Motor, deck, paint and trailer upgrades. Everything!

My wife doesn't yet know. She wanted me to spend ZERO on the KF before we leave for vacation 5 weeks from today. But I'm gonna complete the refurb anyway! And take it on vacation with us! :eyebrows: :fish2:

Am trying to keep a low profile while working on it in the meantime though. I just tell her it's stuff for the transom or the 50HP Mercury. :peep:

Details to follow. :joyous:

Get the edges real good too. That might be the most important part. I used epoxy but same principle. I hit the edges everytime I had a batch made. Each side had three coats and the edges had 6. Looking good. Happy to hear you are all in.

Yup, we really drenched the edges many times.

Getting really fired up here to get this thing done! ;)

Tomorrow will be 3 days since applying the OTF so we'll put the straight spar varnish on the transom and get it to drying.

This afternoon I picked up the parts for the lower unit that I'd ordered last week, so while the varnish dries I'll get to work reassembling the LU. Once assembled I'll try the pressure and vacuum tests.

Got the first coat of spar varnish on the transom about 1/2 hour ago. Will let it dry for at least 4 hours, till about noon, then lightly sand with 220 grit and add the second coat.

Will let the second coat dry for 4 hours then flip the transom and put the first coat on the opposite side. That should be around 4pm this afternoon. Am hoping that it will dry in 4 hours so that I can get the final coat applied today instead of waiting longer.

Sanding got done and second coat of spar varnish applied. Note reflection of engine. :)

Drying is taking a little longer than I'd hoped, putting me behind schedule a bit. Humidity is 98% today and it's been raining off and on. It's LOUD inside that steel garage when the rain pours and the thunder roars!

Side one dried. And it still looks wet! Awesome. :applause:

Transom flipped and the first coat of spar varnish applied to side 2. Will be after the boy's bedtime before it's dry, but I think I'll let him stay up later than normal tonight so that we can get the last coat done. ;)

Looking good, that spar will seal the deal :thumb:

So was your KF being towed behind Bonnie and Clyde's car? That transom, wow!
