Well I am one that believes that if we are friends and you need something I have it is yours,I also believe if I borrow something and it brakes on my watch I fix it and return it in better shape than I received it (just the way I was raised, thanks Dad)

In my short time as a member here I've seen several threads with Mods weighing in, hard and heavy, get shut down.

If you are commenting on this thread, if there is anything that has crossed the standards of what is accepted comment in here, I haven't seen it.
It has been quite civil, really.

Could you be more specific about why you think this might be a candidate for the padlock?:confused:

sure....as I see your confused:confused::confused: my point was simply I have seen threads shut down at the slightest hint of dissagreement around here...let alone one that was started only to further argue about another post..... only difference is that the when the mods are in on it...its just a double-standard.... *off my soapbox now, and you can relax...as I'm not going to comment further and argue with you*

Sounds like you may have joined the wrong forum, may I recommend 'the bilge' at that other place.
This thread is simply talking about a different point of view on loaning and the responses are valid....except for 1 or 2.;)
The mods can tell when a thread is heading south and simply cut it off before the soapboxers get their fingers too warmed up.
Tim is not confused, he is being straight and direct with you and your random assumption.
Good luck at the bilge;):)

Anyone who lends motor vehicles "to anyone who asks" in my humble opinion is one of two things:

1. Just really really dumb

2. Careless.

I would loan my boat to ONE person. why? Because he owned the boat before I bought it from him AND he is on my insurance policy.

My camaro? Only my dad has driven it. My SUV: no one drives that.

The people in this thread that claim to lend stuff to anyone are really opening themselves to a lawsuit. It's just stupid.

Strongly worded, but I agree. It has nothing to do with "how you are raised" either.

Don't be suprised when your dad passes away and you find yourself thinking "I sure wish I had let dad drive that SUV". Nothing you can do about it at that point.

If you don't have anyone at all in your life that you would let drive a frigging SUV, I think that makes a pretty strong statement about you.

I feel sorry for a bunch of you people who value things more than the people in your life. Things can always be replaced, people can't.

You couldn't be more wrong.

My "suv" is a 1993 ford bronco that has bad brakes and randomly stalls. Part of the reason he doesn't get to drive it is because it'd be like handing a loaded gun to a 2 year old.

Maybe a bunch of these people have just never ACTUALLY lent something like a boat to a friend or family member to a day "but they would do it in a heart beat"

Friends used to get pissed at me for the fact that AFTER THEY WERE DRINKING I wouldn't let them ride my jetski (and I wouldn't even if they weren't drinking)...

One day one of my friends with a jetski lends his ski to a guy who "just asked to borrow it"

guy came back with a broken collar bone and 450 dollars worth of damage to the ski.

Why didn't you say that in the first place? Instead of, "My SUV, nobody drives that". You came across very arrogant.... I also don't believe that anyone said they would lend their motor vehicle "to anyone who asks". That's just ridiculous. I have, however, lent my friend a car for a few days while his was getting fixed. That was neither "dumb" nor "careless". It was called, being a friend, and helping out our fellow man in need. I guess I don't have the mine, mine, mine mentality.

I agree with 45Auto's statement that I quoted. It's just "stuff". Yes, we all work hard for our "stuff", but, in the big picture it really doesn't mean anything. Just sayin'.....;)

I think I'm going to go and hug my daughter, pet the dog and kiss my wife. Maybe in that order.....:)

Re: I don't get it.....

I feel sorry for those here who assume and judge other people about whether they lend stuff out or not. The people I see who lend stuff out have junk, not nice stuff.

Get over yourselves. Talk about people sounding arrogant, some of you would have us believe because we don't let our neighbor borrow our boat, we are callous, unloving people, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Go look in your mirror, THAT is the person you should worry about, not everyone else...

I know for a fact that the more anal anyone is about their stuff, over their friends...the fewer friends they have and the less they are invited out. They start living in a pretty small world.....knock yourselves out, oh yeah and make sure you don't get your kids involved in all that kindergarten & early grade school stuff about sharing with others. Clearly you know better, and are by nature setting a better example for them....I'm sure they'll turn out great.;)

we aren't talking about sharing your legos. We're talking about sharing vehicles that can kill other people when the operator has no $$ invested in that car/boat/truck

I'll loan pretty much anything I own to a friend, at least once. The guy that borrowed my chainsaw in may and still hasn't returned it doesn't get to borrow anything anymore

Re: I don't get it.....

Thajeffski hit it on the head when he said people that lend their stuff to ANYONE WHO ASKS.
I lend my truck to friends and family, I have a nice shop with a 2 post lift and tons of tools and I have let people use it to do mods on their vehicles.

The silly people are those who lend their boats or motorcycles or whatever to anyone who asks, especially those who don't have the skills to operate them safely.

Their absolutely are a bunch of holier than though, judgmental people in this thread making wild assumptions about people, and they look completely foolish. :D

p.s. I am involved with a huge group of friends, we are all straight up people and we invest together, we lend each other tens of thousands of dollars all the time. I wonder if that means we have millions of friends? hahahahahahahahahahaha

Re: I don't get it.....

im just saying im careful about who i loan things out to, not so much the low dollar items, but the big ticket items i really have to consider the person. i know a few people who "know" kow to drive stick, they dont. im the one replacing the clutch, motor, etc.

Re: I don't get it.....

I will loan certin things to certin people, if you are a good friend and I KNOW that you are a good rider, my Harley is yours. My small skiff i'll let just about any of my freinds borrow, my deckboat there are about 4 or 5 i might loan it to. my 28' i can only think of 1 I might loan it too, he has run large boats all his life, but it would have to be a pretty darn good reason he needed it. I guess its all in what value you put in different items that you own! and how you have been brought up! When i went to San Deigo while i was in the navy, my dad asked me too look up an old friend of his, so i did, i was 18yo he new me when i was 1yo! We talked for about a half an hour, and he asked me to accompany him to the garage where he had 2 pan heads and a shovel head (Old Harleys for those of you that dont know) he tossed me the key to one of the pans showed me the "trick" to kick starting it and told me it was mine for the 13 weeks i was there! I was floored, but had a blast ridein it too mission beach every weekend. An 18yo with an awsome Pan Head can realy pick up some women on the beach! :D

Yeah, I gotta agree with that one...seen it too.
Here's one to think about: I loaned some tools to an unnamed close friend and didn't see them back for a while. When I went over to their house to help them with a yard sale....guess what I found out for sale with price tags on them.....must've forgot who they belonged to....

I've also had people borrow stuff and never return it until I went and asked for it back...only to find out it was broken and that's why they didn't return it, they were trying to avoid taking responsibility for fixing or replacing the item...even something as stupid as a C-clamp once...

I am definitely touchy about my stuff, but if I trust you then you can have anything you want. By trust, I mean you have to be the kind of person who is going to bring it back in as good or better shape than when you took it, or be willing to replace it if you destroy it....if you are not that type of person to take responsibility for items you borrow...well then don't even ask, because I will tell you exactly why I'm not comfortable with lending you anything.

Again, in the opening post I qualified the statement:

"Don't get me wrong there are people I wont lend advise to. But true friends and family not a problem."

I don't recall reading any post in the thread where some one claimed they would lend a motor vehicle to "any one who asked".

Re: I don't get it.....

If that's the case, this thread is ridiculous and serves NO purpose, except to bash others who might think different than you. I bet most of those people in the thread you are criticizing would lent to true friends and family too.

*unsubscribe* way too much negativity in this thread, who needs it?
