I hope we dont have to go to war, I hope merely the re-election of GWB will make these countries worry enough that they will back off thier bad ways.<br /><br />They know GWB is just crazy enough to attack them.<br /><br />Ken

I doubt either is worrried Ken. On the other hand, I doubt that Saddam was worried in Feb./March 2003 either. I think that is just part of their psychological makeup.

Re: I bet Iran and North Korea are a bit worried

Iran pins hopes on Kerry's victory <br /><br /><br />By Farshid Motahari <br /><br />TEHRAN: The American embassy in Tehran has been turned into a museum - the "Den of Spies" - where numerous documents and pictures are supposed to prove to the world the "imperialistic nature of the Great Satan". <br /><br />On November 4, 1979, Washington's decision to receive the late Shah for medical treatment in the United States provoked students - at that time still loyal to the Islamic revolution - to occupy the US embassy in Tehran <br /><br />The 52 hostages were eventually freed 444 days later, following intensive shuttle diplomacy, but the move left a major impact on Iran's future developments, still tangible 25 years later. <br /><br />"We are still suffering from the aftermath of the embassy occupation," said one of the students of that time, who preferred not to be named because of his current official post. <br /><br />The ensuing sanctions affected not only civil aviation but also lucrative oil and gas projects. The country's nuclear programme also remains blocked owing to the political differences, even though it was the Americans who initially proposed that Iran start nuclear technology as an energy substitute for oil and gas. <br /><br />"The nuclear dispute in Vienna shows once again that Iran's political isolation will not come to an end without a revision towards the US," a European Union diplomat in Tehran said. <br /><br />The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh, has a similar viewpoint. <br /><br />"Technical issues, too - such as Iran's nuclear programme - can't be pursued without first settling the political disputes," he said. <br /><br />The hostility wave is expected by many observers to continue regardless of whether George W. Bush or John F. Kerry enter the White House next year. <br /><br />But any rapprochement with Kerry could be more realistic than with Bush, whose placing Iran among the "axis of evil" not only deeply angered his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Khatami, but also affronted Iranian national pride. <br /><br />"May God soon punish Bush for all his wrongdoings against Iran," the conservative Ayatollah Emami Kashani said, clearly wishing him defeat in the presidential elections. <br /><br />Although Kerry is also expected to continue tough policies against Iran's clergy, Tehran at least hopes to gain some advantages through the Democrat's closer consultation with Europe in world affairs, especially those affecting the Middle East and Gulf. <br /><br />Many observers regard the embassy occupation as the beginning of the Islamic movement, without which some international developments could have assumed different directions. <br /><br />Despite fundamental ideological differences, the two sides could still have had constructive cooperation. The US would have been able not only to compete with Iran's leading trade partners Germany and Japan, but also gain political advantages. <br /><br />With the help of Iran's clergy leaders, the American problem with anti-Israeli militia operations - at least with regards to the Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon - could have been reduced. <br /><br />Tehran might have even dropped some of its antagonistic approach to the Middle East peace process, and helped the Americans in the dilemma in Iraq, especially in the Shia-populated south. <br /><br />Another undeniable bond lies with the almost three million Iranians residing in the US. <br /><br />Their personal qualifications and capital could play a major role in Iran's future development, even if many have already become US citizens. <br /><br />But all short-term efforts by both sides at least to reduce hostilities have failed. Washington still brands Tehran as advocator of state-terrorism, while "Death to the USA" slogans still echo across state-organized political events in Iran. <br /><br />Reform-oriented President Mohammed Khatami termed the embassy occupation,in retrospect, as "an outcry of an oppressed nation in a revolutionary phase, which would not happen again". <br /><br />Ebrahim Asgarzadeh, one of the students at the embassy, branded the occupation as "a Kamikaze act which was right at that time but would no longer make sense". <br /><br />There is meanwhile irony in the ensuing fates of some of the students who occupied the embassy. <br /><br />Mohammad-Reza Khatami, the president's younger brother, is now a main challenger to the clergy system as head of the reform party IIPF. So is his party friend Mohsen Mirdamadi. Both were pushed by the administration into opposition. <br /><br />The translator for the students, Massumeh Ebtekar - known at the time as "Sister Mary" - has been vice-president under Khatami since 1997, in charge of the Department of Environment. Ebtekar is now also among main opponents of Islamic fundamentalism. <br /><br />And last but not least, the leader of the students, Abbas Abdi, is languishing in jail for having published what is deemed a false survey stating that more than 70 per cent of the Iranian people favour resuming ties with the United States.-dpa

It is not elections that influence these countries. They look at the mess in Irak and the only thing they can conclude is that the USA will be busy there for a while yet. That means that they can do whatever they please.

Doesn't work that way Ken. I was there, we could bombard that country day and night and it would do little. North Korea conducts its business below ground. Ground war would be the only way, and in a country that consists of steep, small mountains and flat rice paddies, the only routes of travel are mostly road ways and narrow valleys. All of which are great choke points. There are so many tunnels under that country and leading into south korea that it's a miracle the whole penninsula hasn't caved in. It has been proposed that North Korea can move entire tank divisions into South Korea using tunnels. We were not called the 2nd Infantry Division Speed Bump for nothing. We knew that once the siren sounded for real, the artilley would begin. North Korea has some of the longest range artillery in the world, up to 22 miles plus. Then the hords of ground forces would move through. Unlike Iraq, North Korea has an actual functioning military that actually trains, and knows what they are doing. I think we would win eventually, but it would be a nasty bloody war with a lot of death. The only thing that has ever stopped North Korea from invading South korea is the nuclear contigency we have against them if they ever use chem weapons on South Korea. Chem is the mainstay of the North Korean tactics. They would use artillery chem to soften things up, and the topography lends itself well to chem. Lots of low valleys for the chem to settle in, not a lot of wind flow in those valleys, and the hillsides are impassible to anything but foot soldiers. That same topography makes air assaults difficult, lots of nooks and crannies for them to hide in. Nope, it would not be a fun one, thats for sure. Lets just hope Kim minds his p's and q's...

Yeah, and how 'bout the "monsoon season". Man, what a nightmare. It was either raining harder than anything I have ever seen in my life, or 20 below zero. I shudder.....

JJ and LD are right. If you think this would be a "march to baghdad," then you are not aware of the geography and multitude of other factors. Something over 60% of the country lives in Seoul and the suburbs, all within range of the already loaded artillery rounds (thousands and more, with redundancy) on the DMZ. The first 5 minutes of that would be........

Re: I bet Iran and North Korea are a bit worried

It is strange that Iran would not want me to vote for Bush. They are the reason for me being a republican in the first place. As a kid my first taste of politics and world events came with the Iranian crisis. Day after day Jimmy Carter on the news saying we are doing what we can and the counter in the corner of the TV counting the days . On and on. Before this happened as a kid I would end up in VFW hall or two (another long story) listening to the vets telling stories like how we saved the world and how no one would ever mess with us. Then the U.S. and Jimmy Carter looked weak with a little country holding us by the balls. Then came the rescue attempt. What a piece of work that was. We were defeated. Again. Then came Ronny and ever thing got better and we became strong again with pride in our country. I was a republican for life and I vote. After Regan I guess you can say “I drank the Kool aid”.

Sounds like you know your stuff about Korea. <br /><br />But I dont want to take over Korea, or anything like that. I just want to remove the threat of nukes.<br /><br />Removing the threat is all I care about, they can wollow in their communisim all they want.<br /><br />Honestly I dont think any battle at all is required. North Korea only made nukes for the money and act like they are a superpower. They know if they did ANYTHING, they would be crushed. Kim may be crazy, but he is not stupid. Saddam was stupid.<br /><br />A little bit of diplomacy is all that is required.<br /><br />Ken
