Re: How to use a boat launch

I'm all for taking your time and launching correctly and safely and will help if asked too. One big piece of advice is prep your boat anywhere but on the ramp. It slays me to watch someone back their boat right down to the ramp, stop, and proceed to unbutton covers, load coolers, fishing gear, wakeboards, etc...
The first thing to go through my head when I see those characters? They are not on Iboats!

Re: How to use a boat launch

I've seen people break out the tool chest and go to work right there on the ramp. I've seen people leave their vehicle parked on the ramp while they go for a little test drive. The launch ramp seems to be the only place where there's a good chance that I'm gonna have a temper issue. Luckily my Wife knows when to intervene to keep me from getting my *** kicked.

jajajajajaja sure thing my friend :):):)

Yes, I agree with these post and if you need to pass some time on a Sunday in the month of May in the Northeast you need to grab a chair and sit so you can watch the people with there new boats and that have never had one before. As covered in some of the post backing up can be scary and a lot of people don't have a clue. One day I was coming in and a Man and his wife were going to launch. She was backing the new boat down the cement ramp. Now everything is untied she was doing good then he said stop! whoop's she slams on the brakes and there goes the boat right on the launch. There is always a hazzard at the launch but you need to know that before you get there. Yes it would be nice if everybody could get in and out as most of us do but then that just might be a boring day and would not give us anything to talk about. Happy boating and keep it backing straight:)

I used to tie off to a cleat, when solo launching. Until this one time, they had replaced a wood section of the dock, taking my cleat away. I had to back up further, and my bow line was in the bed of my truck. I was hoping to go to the next cleat, but for some reason the boat just slid off slicker than whale snot! Of course, it wasn't tied off, so ultimately, I jumped in and swam after her LOL. The cost of that launch was a new cell phone, and humiliation from the two guys bank fishing.

I learned a huge lesson that day!

You sound like you are doing great, and being safe!

That is how I solo launch most of the time except I tie my bow line to the rails in my truck... Back up until tires are almost in water, unhook winch, tie bow line to truck rails, ease off, then walk boat and tie just bow at end of ramp if not busy or tie up right with stern lines if the dock is busy...

Re: How to use a boat launch

Last summer was my first season as a boat owner. I started with a canoe, then got a 12' aluminum, then got a 15' fiberglass, then in sept. 09' I got my 17' bass boat, all in one season ! Yeah I went boat crazy ! I had never backed up a trailer in my life before I got the alum. I practiced a bit before hand and it wasnt that intimidating. Then to the 15', not too bad, but the first launch with it I forgot to undo the transom straps!! so there I was, going back and forth on the ramp in the water slamming on the brakes trying to free the boat and wondering why it wouldnt come off the dang trailer ! duh ! And the first launch with the bass boat I didnt put the drain plug in!!! double DUH!! I launched the boat and went to park the truck and as Im walking back to the ramp my girlfriend is SCREAMING "its filling up with water! its sinking! its sinking!!" You will never see a man bring a trailer around and back it down a ramp as fast as I did that day in all your life ! Luckily I got it out in time. I learned a lot last season. Ive already launched a few times this year and so far so good :). But I can always feel the eyes on me !!!

Re: How to use a boat launch

I was a new boat owner last season and launched 20 times without incident, except for the first time! I mentally went over my checklist (thanks iboats!) and was sure I have everything. Well, I forgot to undo the safety chain. And, because it was a deep incline launch, the pressure on the safety chain made it real tough to get off. Only had 1 wrench, and needed to borrow another one from a fellow boater to get it off (my chain is secured with 2 bolts).
Other than that, common sense and proper planning makes launching and retrieving a piece of cake.

Re: How to use a boat launch

Good timing on this thread. Just yesterday I typed up some boat launch instructions for my 25 year old son who wants to take my boat out some this summer. I thought I would post it here for any new boat owners who might need a specific list. Hopefully, some of you will critique it and offer additions or clarifications:

Before towing: Check fuel level, oil level. Test crank motor on muffs and hose. Check possession of plug, keys, registration, first aid kit, flares, PFDs, whistle, fire extinguisher, tire inflation pressure and tread condition including spare, tie down strap and winch, check operation of lights, hitch tightness and safety chains. Place motor on towing support. Check truck mirrors and possession of jack and lug wrenches. Unplug battery chargers.

Staging area: Place or check presence of plug. Place cockpit plugs. Remove tie-down strap and stow in truck. Load boat with fishing equipment, food, cooler, etc. Unplug trailer lights. Place key in ignition, squeeze bulbs for gas and for oil. Raise engine and fold up towing brace. Lower tail gate for better vision if not making sharp turns.

Proceed to ramp. Back down ramp until tires are just into water or far enough that you can walk to winch on land. Stop truck, place parking brake, place transmission in Park, walk to hitch, unhook strap and safety chain. Have one person climb onboard or if launching alone, attach bowline and tie to winch post or dock. Get back in truck, back down until stern of boat starts to float. If on the boat, lower motor and crank it up. Back down a small distance and step on brakes, inertia should pop boat off. If launching alone tie bowline to trailer or dock or have assistant hold boat to dock out of the way of other people launching if possible. Close tail gate. Get in truck, place in drive, and go park truck and trailer. Lock truck, lock cap door, board boat, and place truck keys in safe, dry location.

To load boat: Let driver off on dock or shore to go get truck. At top of ramp, lower tailgate. Wait in boat out in water or by dock out of way of other people pulling their boat. Back trailer in until hubs are just under water, depending on steepness of ramp. Drive boat onto trailer, being careful not to run up too fast and hit winch stand. If bow of boat is under winch roller, the trailer is too far into water and stern is floating too high. Either pull forward slightly or if not too deep you might be able to push boat back out slightly and winch it up. When winched up and safety chain is attached, turn off motor, raise motor. Close tailgate. Drive up (if ramp is slick and steep, you might need 4 wheel drive) to an area out of the way of others. Lower motor onto towing brace, remove plug allowing any water to drain and place in safe location, place tie-down strap and tighten, take boat keys out. Plug trailer lights back in, unload items that might get blown out or damaged if left in boat. If in saltwater, flush motor well at flush station and hose off boat and trailer.

Parents and their Kids.

I was attempting to Retrieve my boat Saturday and the Ramp was full of kids from very young to Teenagers. Why do these parents let their kids play in the Water at the end of the ramp? I had my son make sure the ramp was clear before backing the Trailer into the water.
