:D Yeah, I hear you. I cant decide which end is worse..... the boat with a chain of 20 overhand knots or the dock with 30 feet of line wrapped around a six inch cleat......
Yeah how aout it....my turn to LMAO.....somebody I know is guilty of both of these offenses....and he used to be in the NAVY for crying out loud.....

Re: How to use a boat launch

This thread made me think of one time when my wife and I went to the lake. We staged it in the staging area and my son and I got on the boat. Two older gentlemen looked at me like I was crazy letting my young pretty wife back the boat in. She pulled around and hit it in one shot, perfectly straight, stifling their giggles. I just shrugged and said, "farm gal" with a huge grin on my face. Bet they won't assume next time.

this is the reason I carry a few scuff golf balls just for this occasion- you can throw them a mile then they sink:cool:
i also have no issue tying a 99cent lead jig w/ treble hooks to my Zebco 33 for a shot accross the bow.

the problem is these fools do not read these post .
I have flagged down many a jet skier and asked them if they know what the "NO WAKE " buoy means and what it means to them-always the same stupid look & awnser " I did'nt know"

I think everyone is there to have fun but some people just don't get it.

Re: How to use a boat launch

As anyone that has been boating for any length of time can tell you, boat launches can be a real nightmare, here is how a launch is suppose to work, hopefully everyone with a boat reads this and the world will be a much better place.

A boat launch actually consists of 3 distinct areas, the ramp, parking area and the most important and least used part, the staging area, all launches are different some have multiple lanes and launches some a single ramp but they all consist of these 3 parts.

The staging area is where you should start and finish every trip, it is the area away from the parking lot and ramp where you can take all the time you want to load coolers, floats, ect on your boat with out raising anyones blood pressure.

When you arrive at the launch you should go to the staging area and get your boat as close to launching as possible, get everything loaded and unhooked so when you get to the ramp you can just get the boat in and clear the ramp for the next guy, you should be on and off the ramp in less than 3-4 minutes.

Then you go park, use your head here and don't parallel park or anything silly like that and the space directly in front of the ramp is for launching, it isn't a parking spot.

When you are ready to leave just reverse the process, load the boat and go the staging area, the bow strap will certainly hold the boat for that long then in the staging area out of everyones way you can take as much time as you want to unload and secure the boat for the drive home.

The entire point here is to be on the ramp for as little time as possible, few things are as frustrating than watching someone back down the ramp then stop and spend 10 minutes loading up the boat or loading the boat and sitting on the ramp to secure and unload it, it is all about being considerate of others.
I'm fairly new to boating. This will be my second season using boat ramps. Though I've managed not to infringe on most of the procedures you've covered, it would have been very helpful to read this before using the ramps. It is quite stressful on Sunday just before sun goes down. I learned the hard way about proper ramp etiquette on one occasion. I really got an ear-full. Humbling experience. Thanks for the post and all the informative comments, even the ones from the "peanut gallery":)

Re: How to use a boat launch

I see nothing wrong with leaving a boat ties up to park the truck, even on a busy day. If I'm by mywelf it's the only way to do it, and I can usually do the whole thing in 2-3 minutes, certianly less than five. Typically i can tie the boat to the end of the ramp dock and the nest guy can start backing in and getting ready while I am parking. He's not ready to pull out before I'm back anyway.

Today I had to leave the boat tied up at the ramp for about fifteen minutes - the boat overheated at the other side of the lake and I had to get a ride back to the truck and trailer and drive back. Luckily it wasn't busy at all, but I was able to tie up outside the dock when loading could only happen on the inside. It wasn't in anyone's way at all even if it was busy.

It's not hard to be considerate, but it can still be doen if boating alone.

Re: How to use a boat launch

I saw a boat launch Saturday what I consider Unsafe. The boat being Launched was 20-22ft Ski/fish boat. One person was in the boat and another person was backing the boat down the ramp at a faster than normal speed. Once the boat and trailer got far enough into the water the driver in the truck hit the brakes hard and the boat flung into the water off the trailer.

Has anyone else seen this type of Practice.

I do something similar, albeit very slowly. I back it in until I see the stern start moving, then tap my brakes and she slides right off the bunks.
If I have my wife along, she has the bow and stern lines. If I am solo, the bow line is wrapped around my winch post.

Going fast and doing it, no thanks!

That's exactly how I do it Skargo. Makes it easier on the admiral. She doesn't have to strain to PULL the boat off. I position the trailer in such a way that when I pop the boat off all she has do is guide it with the bow and stern lines and tie it off. When I go solo, like yesterday, I put the trailer in and stop just before it would float. Then I tie the bow and stern lines to the dock cleats (leaving some give in each) get back in the truck back further until boat pops off - get out secure the dock lines and park the truck. Ramp was crowded this weekend and I beat the guys next to me (3 of them working one boat) and I was solo. I was a bot annoyed at them for positioning their truck a little close to mine but all was good after they complimented me on how smoothly my solo launch went.

Re: How to use a boat launch

Maybe I'm just Paranoid because I'm a Little new at this.

I have my wife out of the Boat guiding me to make sure I do not hit anyone or anything. When I get close to the water she gets in the boat and I continue to back into the water. I get out of the truck and disconnect the safety line and wrinch line. She starts up the motor and goes in reverse as I give the boat a good shove off the trailer. Maybe I'm taking extra time on the ramp but I wan't to be safe. I'm not saying anyone is doing anything not safe. I'm a newbee so Im learning.

I used to tie off to a cleat, when solo launching. Until this one time, they had replaced a wood section of the dock, taking my cleat away. I had to back up further, and my bow line was in the bed of my truck. I was hoping to go to the next cleat, but for some reason the boat just slid off slicker than whale snot! Of course, it wasn't tied off, so ultimately, I jumped in and swam after her LOL. The cost of that launch was a new cell phone, and humiliation from the two guys bank fishing.

I learned a huge lesson that day!

Thanks,

I fear the Busy Summer Though. At this point we have had very little boat traffic to deal with during our Launch and Retrieval. I'm nervous just thinking about it.

It's O.k. to be afraid....just don't let your fear show.....They feed off fear.....

David,

You'll be fine. Sounds like you are doing everything right. Take your time. Comfort comes with experience.....you will get there. Plus, if someone is "new", "nervous" and could use some help, there are always decent guys willing to help, if asked. Also, if I am behind a newbie that is trying to do things right, I have all the patience in the world for him (been there!). It's the newbies, and even some not so newbies that just don't "try" to follow the ettiquete that I have little patience for. Good luck and enjoy your first full season with your new toy!

You will be fine. Even though i was around boats as a younger guy, last summer was the first time I ever launched and retrieved a boat. Did it 21 times without too much trouble, except for the incident I mentioned earlier.

Iboats certainly helped me tremendously!

I have been around boats when I was little but boat ownership is a whole new ball game.

Re: How to use a boat launch

I'm all for taking your time and launching correctly and safely and will help if asked too. One big piece of advice is prep your boat anywhere but on the ramp. It slays me to watch someone back their boat right down to the ramp, stop, and proceed to unbutton covers, load coolers, fishing gear, wakeboards, etc...
