How to measure voltage from stator to switch box

I have a 50 HP 4 CYL 1983 Mariner outboard with electric start. I get no spark at the plugs so I want to find out if alternating current is going to the switch box from both the stator and the trigger. How do I do this? I also want to know if direct current is going to the coils from the switch box. How do I do this?

Not being sarcastic but get a manual. My manual outlines the process for my 3 cyl 90 hp but the 4 cyl is a carryover from the cross flow original days and may have been updated differently than an engine that was designed with current technology.

A DVA meter or a DVA adaptor for use with any volt/ohm meter is a GOT TO HAVE item in order to troubleshoot an ignition system.

Without it you can spend a lot of money replacing parts that you 'think' might be the problem.
