Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

great thread, kudos to Rotorfixer!!

I've been searching for answers for weeks, printing diagrams, writing down part numbers, reading post and starting over again. My goal is to use the smartcraft feature on my Navman 6600 combo unit. I know it's old but it would be the cheapest way gain motor information including troll control. I have 2 2005 150 opti's and finally yesterday I found a harness on the engine that has a PN of 84-859244A2 and says "smartcraft". It only has 6 pins though. Is this the plug to plug in PN-879981T25?

Thanks,
David

Thanks,

First off, I do not believe you will have troll control without an actual mercury gauge. That is just a hunch.

Didn't the connector on the end of that harness have a yellow "terminator" plug?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello, this is my first message,i live in italy,so sorry for my bad english.
My first question is:
I have a boat with mercruiser mag 350 smartcraft, but i have all instruments analog,if i understand, for install the system monitor,i must buy harness smartcraft(blu cable) and connect one terminal to the engine and the other directly to system monitor, and no change the analog links. In this way on the system monitor i have all function:fuel ,temperature pressure ecc.. or no??
Second question, if i buy the gauges faria mg2000,then i have to buy a junction box and connect the tach. and the system monitor to it?
Thank you Salvatore

Hello,

you didn't state what year of engine but it shouldn't matter anyways. Yes the system monitor can connect directly to the engine with one cable, and does not affect your analog gauges.

you would then have all of the read outs that your engine supports (including basic fault codes). Fuel tank quantity and any related read outs would require a separate harness and would cause you to have to disable your analog fuel quantity gauge.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello,

I also got a small problem with rigging up my smartcraft stuff. Hopefully anybody can help me here because I'm not able to find the connection at the egineside for the fuel/paddle/oil harness 859743T03.

My outboard is a 2011 60hp efi. The harness comes with a 6 pin connector but I can't find the place where I have to plug it into the engine.

Close to the connection for the can bus on the frontside is another connector with 4 wires which looks exactly like the one of the paddle wheel from the harness, but I can't locate anywhere a unused 6 pin connector to integrate the harness.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

After that i read the 3d with more attention, i have understand better the connection smartcraft(i hope ).
But i have some doubt.
If i want connect directly the engine to monitor system, than i can to buy the harness 879982t20,this is blue cable that has two terminator, one final i connect to engine(10 pin and 4 pin)and another to system monitor ...If instead i want use the junction box(for future connections) i must buy the harness that has one resistor(and than use a resistor yellow on the side of the junction box),or i can use the cable with two resistor(879982t20) ??And in this case i must use the yellows terminator on the j.box too,or no??
Another questions:
If i connect a blue cable(with connector to 10 pin and connector to 4 pin),i ended the wiring or i must connect the connect cable(fuel ecc..)
A last question:
Anyone know the code of the harness that connect system monitor to junction box??
Regards Salvatore

I can tell you get it!!

you shouldn't use the cable with TWO yellow ends if you use a junction box. You just use a ONE resistor cable (one yellow end) to connect it to the engine, then one yellow resistor plug in the junction box (most likely just use the one you removed from the engine to connect the blue cable). P/N is on ishopmarine website.

You do not HAVE to use the fuel/oil/paddlewheel harness, it is an option as I said in my above reply to you. I hope that is what you meant.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

View attachment 139904Firstly, I have learned a great deal through this thread. It has a wealth of information and thanks to all for taking the time and effort, especially the OP.
Secondly, I feel stupid. I upgraded from 99 200 opti's to 05 225 opti's. I wanted to go the smartcraft route so I purchased two SC1000 tachs, a fuel gauge, and two temp gauges. I have run the harnesses for the tachs with the dual resistor ends as I will not be running through junction boxes and I can do without certain functions this method will limit me to. My issue is with the paddle wheel, fuel and oil harness. I called Mercury Service and I was provided with two harnesses I would need. 859743T03 and 898285T01. The latter is an adapter because my motors are 05's and not newer. I am not using the paddle wheel or the oil tank level. I cannot find where to connect the stinkin plug for the fuel. It supposed to be just under the starter but I cannot find it for the life of me. Here are some pics.

It is a four pin square connector. maybe I have the wrong connector. Or maybe as my wife says, I am just stupid.
Either way, any help would be most appreciated.

Hahaha, love it. I am pretty sure it is a flat 6 pin connector?? Like I have posted at the start of the thread??

look at my fist post, there is a link where I have a photo of the location of the fuel/oil/paddle wheel connector, on my engine it is a 6 pin connector, it may LOOK like a 4 pin, take the cap off to be sure.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Thanks for confirming my wife's suspicion. On the fuel paddle wheel harness there are a total of four connections from what I gather. Square four pin to engine harness for fuel. Flat four pin to paddle wheel and two loose wire connector to oil tank. The other two at the far end of the harness go to fuel sender.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello,

thank you all a lot for the help and quick answers so far. The connection which is left at my engine is a flat one with four cables in one row. The connector from the fuel/paddle/oil harness which should go into the motor has got six pins in two rows alltogether.

The one I got at the engine looks exactly the same as the one from the harness which connects to the paddle wheel. Both of them are the "female" version of the connector.

I doubt that the one in front of the outboard is the right one because the fuel/paddle/oil harness carries 6 cables (4 belong to the paddle wheel/2 for the fuel reservoirs) and the one at the outboard got only 4. None of the colours of the outboard harness and the fuel/paddle/oil harness are matching.

Tomorrow I will make some pictures and load them up here maybe it makes it easier to find the solution...

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

have either of you two looked at the picture I have a link to in the very first post on this thread??? I also have a flat 4 pin connector, up higher than the smartcraft connector but the the I needed (6 pin) is right near the smartcraft connector. Please post a picture of what you have.

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello,

here we go with the pictures. Please excuse the bad quality of them but related to extrem bad weather with snow over here I didn't wanted to remove the cover more than neccassary...

Here is the connector with the weathercap on it:

and that's the way it looks without the cap:

The next picture shows the connector of the paddle/oil/fuel harness which should go into the engine:

Here a view from the front of it:

I hope what I made is good enough to show my problem...

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

I believe I was sold the wrong fuel paddle wheel harness. The connection on the motor is 6 pin and the connection on the harness is 4 pin. I am going to see if I find an adapter.

Weird.... it is like both of you have the harness that the other one needs..... I wasn't aware of a 4 pin harness though. Henyrj what size is you engine?

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hello Henry can you please poste a picture from the connector at your harness and the partnumber of your harness version?
If there exists a adapter it would be great, but I doubt it, because even when the connector fits there would be still 6 cables in the one and 4 cable in the other harness arriving...

Re: How to install a SMARTCRAFT system

Hi Rotorfixer, and thank you for your reply.I don't understand well:
My engine is 2005,i use the analog gauge and the monitor system.I connected it with one cable(one resistor to engine)
engine-junction box,and a cable junction box-system monitor ,i have attached to j.b. one resistor too.
I cheked that monitor system function, but because the boat is in dry i'm not sure that its function very well.
I ask you if with this configuration on the monitor system i read oil pressure, water temperaute of the engine and the fuel flow.Or I have to do something else??
Regards Salvatore

Hi Salvatore,

you will read whatever that engine supports, I think you will see everything you have asked about. I wanted to make sure you weren't asking about "fuel range" or anything that requires an additional harness. Fuel flow should show up.

Hello Rotorfixer, thank you,you have reassured me.....
i have a last answer: the system monitor is compatible with nmea 0183 or no??I beliewe that its not compatible, but i wanted to be sure.
Best regards and compliment for the 3d.

That is correct. It will not connect to the NMEA network. It will give you range however, if you connect the fuel tank to the optional fuel/ oil/ paddlewheel harness.

If I were you I would have bought a "MercMonitor" it is the new version of a system monitor, many new functions. more pricey but worth it!
