I have a 19 foot "85 Sea Ray cuddy. Deck and stringers are (were) rotted, with 100% of advice coming from this forum ive removed them. Getting ready to order from US Composites. I would like to order the majority of what i need all at once resin, csm, 1708. Has anyone kept track of what they used for a boat this size? Just doing deck and stringers rest was good, or is there a rule of thumb for figuring it out?
Im convinced it is posted somewhere on the forum but cannot find it. I almost junked the boat but thanks to all you guys it will see the lake again. Thank You

Re: How much material to order?

This is a generic materials list for a 16' F/G boat, add 25% to each item and you should be pretty close.

25 yds of 1.5 oz CSM
15 yds of 1708
15 gals of Poly Resin
10 qts of Cabosil
1 lb of 1/4" Chopped Strand
Bubble Roller
Lots of Latex gloves or Nitrile gloves
Mixing buckets
metric measuring cups
Large Scissors
Masking Tape

Don't forget chip brushes. Maybe rollers. I use the 4" rollers from Lowes, but I'm using epoxy, so I'm not sure those will work with poly.

So the bulkheads are fine then ? ..

Nix the bag of chopped glass .. you can make that yourself with all the leftover mat that your going to have.

Nix the foam rollers .. use the 3/8 nap rollers for resin coating ( even if you have to saw them down to fit a 3-4" cage ).

Nix the nitrile gloves .. use the latex.

Your going to need up to 5 gallons of Acetone ( depending on how much glassin you do at one time ).

Got some pics ?

Re: How much material to order?

Do you have an idea of what lam schedule you want to use for your stringers/bulkies/deck ?

That would dictate how much material you would need.

Re: How much material to order?

This is the laminate schedule for stringers that most people use on here:

Stringers_zps840bac88.jpg

That's how many layers and what kind of cloth/mat.

Diving in without doing the proper research is the worst thing you can do, we've seen quite a few people make some big mistakes on here because of that.

You can dive in on the demolition, but you better start studying before you start any building back.

You should read this too:

Do you have all of your grinding on the hull done yet?

Re: How much material to order?

Believe me that diagram was saved in my favorites and thats exactly how I was going to do it. I have done countless hours of reading on this forum. I meant dive in according to the experts. The only thing the diagram doesnt show is a layer csm or resin on the stringer before bedding, dont you do that?

No, the raw wood is bedded in and after the bedding is set or cured then you start the glassing procedures. What do you intend to use for bedding, PL or peanutbutter? PL has to cure for 72 hrs. after bedding.

Re: How much material to order?

PL Premium for bedding and also use that for fillet-ive read others doing it that way. heated garage have time to wait, plus plenty of other things to do..... Skipping the csm on the stringers gets me motivated. Pl shopping tonite. This is too good, i do a lot of car work in my garage but the boat thing is cool. Ive seen another rescue in a backyard on my way to work. If this goes well ill have another Please.

Well, you don't really skip the CSM on the stringers... you just apply it when doing your layups.:joyous:

This site should come with a warning when you register Caution! Boat Restoration May Become Habit Forming!... please don't blame us if you become addicted to it.

Re: How much material to order?

Take it from me, DO NOT use PL for the fillets. What I have found is that when it dries it tends to bulge out and create air pockets that are weak. Use the PL to glue down the stringers and go back with Thickened resin (Peanut Butter) and make your rounded edges (fillets) PL does not dry very good when laid on thick.

I used over 20 gallon of cabosil on my boat... just sayin.

According to US Composites the CSM is not required between layups of 1708. !708 has CSM sewn onto it and serves as the binder layer.

Re: How much material to order?

So do you not recommend csm between 1708? Either way i dont have a problem. Is cabosil mixed with chopped glass or applied as is? i read you mixed chopped glass with resin for PB. Too much info is good when you sort it out when you get it all at once its a good pile . Thanks, thought i had it under control. Maybe not------

Re: How much material to order?

Doing CSM between layups will eat even more resin and is not needed according to US Composites.

Here is a Video i made on how to Mix Peanut butter. You can mess around with the ratios to get it the way tou want.

Re: How much material to order?

The 1708 Biax only has 3/4 oz mat on it, the above layup schedule calls for 1-1/2 oz. in addition to the 1708 Biax. If you omit the 2 layers of 1-1/2 oz. CSM you may want to go with a third layer of 1708 biax instead.

Mix resin, cabosil, and chopped glass to make the PB. Mix resin and cabosil to a mayo consistency then add chopped glass to a thicker peanutbutter consistency.

You can find the cabosil and other fillers here:
