It depends...Might not be a bad Idea to call your Personal physician and give him a heads up and see what he tells you. You only got one set of lungs. You gotta, use a Respirator man!!!!

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks WOG,
I'm sure sorry that I had to find out the hard way. Before I grind anything else I will make this the next thing that I buy.
The sad part is I went to the doctor this morning and didn't mention it.

Hey Guys,
I ordered a respirator today,I was needing to know if this one will do the job for the rebuild?
"3M R6211 Low-Maintenance Half-Mask Organic Vapor, P95 Respirator Assembly, Medium", or do I need a different one?

That should be fine as long as it fits your face :)

Wear eye protection too.

Yep, just make sure that WHEN you start to smell the resin, change the filters.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks Guys,
I have a pair of goggles with the holes tapped. I didn't do anything today besides order the respirator, it will be in tomorrow morning. I didn't feel all that great today, so I decided to take the rest of the week off to recover from the dust, I hope this will clear up soon, I have a fishing trip planned for Monday and if all goes well I will get back to the boat Tuesday.
Thanks again,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi Guys,
I got my respirator in, it fits well. This should keep me from breathing fiberglass dust. I really learned my lesson the hard way. It is no fun breathing that dust, if anyone is planning on doing any grinding on fiberglass and this is your first time make sure that you invest in a respirator and don't even think about using a paper mask like I did. Please read the sticky on safety equipment before you start your project. After a week of being sick you'll wish that you had purchased one. I hope that anyone reading this that hadn't did this before will take note,FIBERGLASS DUST IS NO JOKE.
Thanks,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks YD,
I hope that this info is useful to someone that intends to take on this type of project. I had pushed forward to the point that I didn't think of checking out the stickys to find out about the correct safety gear to use. BAD MISTAKE:eek: I hope some can learn from my mistake and persue safety as much as the rebuild.
Thanks.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi Guys,
I'm sorry that I have not been around since I got into the dust. I've been into fishing with a buddy of mine and into restore everything mode. I picked up an '89 F-150 and I've did a lot of work on it, I also decided to do some upgrades to my Jon Boat. All of this kinda kept me busy, I had to put my bass boat on hold for a little while to clear up some of my other projects.
I'm moving along at a pretty good pace and all is coming together well. I will post some pic's of the Jon Boat when I get a little more done.
Happy boating,
BR

Jasoutside just shot his w/ Rustoleum Pro (Sea Nymph). If you're down to bare aluminum, you'll need to prep it & shoot the bare spots w/ ZC primer...

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks jbcurt00,
Mine is not down to bare aluminium, the od green color is faded somewhat and I'm about to carpet the inside of it. I want to change the color from that dull green to a shiney blue/silver to match my bass boat and my pickup.
Thanks for the info.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

WOG,
The Flamingo looks really good! I saw the products that you used, I'm still trying to get the mixing ratios understood. Here in South GA the temprature is in the mid 90's most days and I don't like a paint roller much,so I will have to try my hand at spraying the primer and top coats. If there were any way that I could know a little more on which of the products would be best suited for painting my Jon Boat that would be a big help.
I have painted houses before, but never a vehicle of any kind.
Thanks,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Not sure what else you need to know. The Valspar products is what I'd recommend. You must acid was the boat first. You must use self etching primer on any bare aluminum. 1/2 cup of Acetone & 1/4 cup of Mineral Spirits (In High Temps(above 85?) use 1/2 cup of Mineral Spirits and 1/4 cup Acetone or substitute Acrylic Enamel High Temp Reducer sold at some Auto Supply stores. I used Acme Finish 1.)
2oz of Hardener (1/4 cup/4Tablespoons)
(NOTE: Only add Hardener to the amount of Paint that you will use in an 8hr period.) DO NOT use after this 8hr period.

I mixed up 2 cups (1/2 qt) at a time using 1oz of hardener(4 tablespoons), 3/4 cup of reducer(1/2 cup of Mineral spirits and 1/4 cup of Acetone).

One Quart should yield two coats of Paint.
Shoot first coat in the morning.
Wait 4-6 hours.
Wet sand with ScotchBrite Pad LIGHTLY to knock down any nubs or bugs.
Dry.
Tack cloth off with damp clot of 50/50 mix of Mineral Spirits and Acetone.
Dry.
Shoot second Coat.
Let dry over night
Repeat wet sand and Tack cloth
Shoot 3rd and 4th coat if needed.

HINT: If you want a COLOR that you cannot find, then you can use Acrylic Artists OIL paint from any Art supply store that you buy in tubes. Thin it with Acetone and mix it with the Base Color Paint. You can get ANY Color in the Rainbow and it works GREAT!!!!

Remember, your paint job will only be as good as your surface prep. The primer will tell the story. If you can SEE it when it's in primer you'll see it in the finish coat. Sand it and fill it if you want it smooth on the final coat. 3M Premium Marine Filler is good stuff. I do not recommend using Bondo. Some people use it but I will absorb water if the paint chips on it. For small blemishes and surfaces scratches It might me ok. A high build primer can also be used to take care of those.
TCP Global sells a good High Build Primer for Fiberglass, as well as Acrylic Enamel Paints and supplies at reasonable prices. I might try their paint on my next boat project.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks WOG, I think that I got it now. I will look for the Valspar paint. I have seen Valspar paint in Lowe's,I will contact them to see if they carry the kind needed to do the job. I already have Acetone on hand that I purchased for the bass boat, I can get mineral spirits from Stone's, the reducer is not a problem,I'm not sure where to find self-etching primer, I never noticed it before.
Thanks,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Wal Mart sometimes carries Self Etching Rustoleum primer in spray cans. If not you can find it in Auto Supply houses. Tractor Supply Inc stores used to carry the Valspar Tractor Paint but is closing it out. They are carrying Majic Paint and it would work too. Lowe's has the Rustoleum Professional Oil Based paint and that will work too with the Acrylic enamel hardener. If you can find a Paint store that supplies auto Paint they will usually have the acrylic enamel hardener.
