Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

B.R. man.. you should be fine :)

If you need to adjust the hull on the trailer to make it Fit better then you will have no problem when all that weight is off there. .. you have your own bunks.

Sure you can chalk up here and there..but the normal structure of the hull should not defect that much to worry about.

As far as a Big Boy suit.. you might consider getting a 4x Cotton Thin cover all jumper. .. baby powder the inside before you start..and then use a blow gun from compressed air to get out of it. .. Seriously ..

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks YD.,
I will surley do just that. WOG had gave me the URL to a sight on EBay that had 4x tyvek suits, I did some serching around the Net and I found a company that carry 5x tyvek suits. From the advise that you have given me the cotton jumper will be a heck-of-a-lot cooler in this South Georgia heat. The forcast is predicting high 80s and low 90s all week.

I got a little work done today, I got some wood cut, one battery box and foam removed. I hope to remove the other battery box and foam tomorrow, then try to finish cutting wood for both battery boxes.

Thanks for all of the good advise.:)

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi Guys,

I made a little more progress today, I finished removing the battery boxes and transom.

I didn't take a lot of pics, I was too tired from cutting wood for the battery boxes and tearing out rotted wood and foam.

I have to cut wood for the transom tomorrow. I will do an update on my progress then.
See ya soon,:)

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi Again,
I got a little more work in today. I assembled the battery boxes, built the transom, and dry fitted everything to check the fit.

I am going to have to stop for a little while, I have to replace my multitool so I can cut out the remaining portions of the stringers, then I will have a large ITCH party.::eek:
So for now its buy a new tool, sand some wood, and make plans to move forward.
You all have a nice day!

Here are a few pictures of the hull where I discovered some wood that run parallel to the stringers if you can see it.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi guys,
I thought these would be difficult to see the wood attached to the hull. I have to do some grinding to clean up the foam and I will try to get some better pictures of the hull.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

The only thing I can think of is some kind of hull stiffeners ..

I would probably put them back :) .

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks YD,
When I start redoing the hull I will replace them and reglass them. Do you think that I should wrap them in csm, then attach them to the hull in 1708?
Thanks again,

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

I dont see a reason to glass them before you do your over all glassing.

They should be completely sealed up by the time you do your stringer glassin..

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks YD,
I've been a little busy today, I had an ITCH party going on! lol. I got the hull ground and washed, and the remainder of the stringers removed.

When I make the stringers I will coat those strips with resin and cover with csm and 1708 if this is the correct way of doing it. your feedback is most welcome.:) Let me know what you think.

Yup..sounds like a good plan.

Just be sure to coat/prep the wood real good before your lams or you could have a lot of air bubbles.

Its all about prep.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks YD,

I didn't get to work any today, very tired from hull grinding and not getting enough sleep due to itch apnea. lol
I plan to wipe the hull down tomorrow with acetone and make templates for the stringers and figure out how to make the bulkheads, mine were rotted away and I don't have a clue as to how they were made. All that was left was the glass sitting on the foam, thats going to be a lot of fun.

Question #1 Do I have to try to sand the color of the redwood off of the tramsom?
#2 What do you recommend to glue the transom to the hull with, PL or PB? Also to glue the wood together for the transom.

I've read a lot of posts and there are different methods used, I would like your opinion.

Thanks,
BR

Q#1. Yup..Grind till its all bare raw glass ( dont dish it out ..keep it as flat as you can ).

Q#2. Ive never used PL so I cannot say one way or another. It really depends on the condition of the fiberglass. Sometimes I use a few layers of mat/resin..sometimes I use Fiberglass Putty ( because of miss-shape ) . I have never used a 5200 type product. Not to say it wont work..just never used myself nor have I ever seen it used.

Q#3. I always use Epoxy to Lam 2 pieces of ply faces together now. I have in the past used resin/mat..but I find that Epoxy is Way better now. Not to say that you cant use a layer of mat or slurry of resin/silica .. but Epoxy is my personal choice now.

Lastly..the Itch Apnea .. ( this should be in the sticky thingy up top IMHO ).

Before you put your clothes on Grind Baby powder ( Talcum powder ) aggresively into your skin ( I mean hammer it in like suntan lotion when your nice and dry ). Wear Only Cotton clothes ! Before you put your grinding suit on..dump a few loads of Talcum powder down the arms and legs and Crotch. .. Grind away.
Have only Cotton Bed Sheets ( poly blend sheets will make it worse or even silk or satin is even way worse). Smallest count sheet bedding I have found to be the best..so if you have 1400 count vs. 600 count sheets the 600 will feel better for you.
Try not to touch any part of your body to each other when grinding. Meaning..while grinding try not to rub your arms against your legs or your hands rest on your legs..or anything else touch each other. Even if your in a suit it will still get in there.
When you get out of your suit ( which is most likely sweaty and very hard to get off ) get Directly into the shower. HOT as you can stand it ( Hot water will open up your pores ). Do NOT start just soap scrubbing up and down on your arms/legs/Feet. Work in ONE direction. Away from Torso and out towards your hands and feet. Never Wipe Backwards ! It will push in them little glass shards. When your done cleaning..turn your shower to the Coldest you can stand it and just sit there in the cold ( this will Close up your pores ). Then when drying off with a towel again move in one direction ( or none at all just dab/pat yourself dry ).

Not hope it helps..It Will help :)

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks for all that great info, I don't have that much grinding left to do. I will keep all your instructions in mind. I had to sit in a hot tub of water and that worked for me.

the rerason I asked about the PL, was friscoboater's video had mentioned it. I was planning on using poly resin for the repair, so I guess I will have to price the epoxy and see how the old budget works.

Thanks,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Trust me on this one. To glue your two laminations together for your transom all you need is Titebond III wood glue from LOWE's. It's 100% waterproof glue and one of the best glues for marine use. You can Google the specs on it and check it out for yourself. Use some woodscrews for "Clamps" to hold it together and then the next day remove the screws. When you install the transom you can fill the screw holes with the PB mix and the transom will last for decades. The Titebond III is as good or better glue than the MFG uses to make the Plywood with.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks WOG,
I've whitnessed the strength of Titebond, I have some. The wood will tear apart before the glue breaks.
That sounds pretty good to me. I just priced epoxy resin from USC and for a 5 gallon size were talking $290, thats a little too expensive for me at this point in time.
Thanks,

You'll need about a quart of the TB III

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

ThanksWOG,
After just reading a "sticky" on safety equipment I found out I made a wrong choice, I used a paper mask when I was grinding, now I'm caughing my head off, will this last a long time or do I have to go see the doctor for help?
