Unless you like scouring ebay for parts, I'd avoid the OMC.

Besides being an OMC, that boat is WAY underpowered. You need at least a 350 in a boat that size. You also want to avoid Bayliners from the mid to late 80s to early 90s like the plague.

back in the 80's starting in 1986, Bayliner really scrimped on the quality of their boats. I know..I had a 1987. Once the recession of the early 90s hit, they started making their quality a little better.

I can't talk for the hull construction but everything else attached to the boat was horrible...railings ...bulkheads...doors....seats...windshield.

How many of you Bay-Haters have owned one!!!
I"ve had my 88' 2655 Ciera for 9yrs. now and LOVE it.
No probs, except for a few mishaps on my end of the learning curve when I bought it.

This is a good site for comparisons:

I have owned 2! A 1987 and a 1978. The quality went WAY down between 1978 and 1987.

Yes, That 305 will be a dog in that boat.

To all you OMC haters .

PLEASE show me one part that I can't get for my two 1987 350's OMC's.

Also show me one part that I can't get for my Cobra outdrives. :)

King Cobra's don't count parts for them are rare as hens teeth..

For crying out loud even Iboats carries OMC parts. :)

On t 1987 305 you can't get the pan anymore. When my pan rusted out, I wanted to make sure that I could get the same pan so that the hardware that screws into the pan for the dipstick would still work. I ended up getting a pan from a newer model and of course all the dipstick hardware is different so I had to buy that too.

That a good enough example for you?

Ayuh,... I'd like to see where you're gonna buy Factory, oem exhaust manifolds for that motor,.?.?.?.
How about a replacement Case for that drive,..??

Granted,... Aftermarket manifolds can fit, or be cobbed together...
But,...
Wack the case on that drive, 'n you're SOL...

Just sayin' 'cause you asked...

Bayliner was bought by Brunswick in 1986, or 87. Brunswick cut corners and quality to keep costs down. Scrimped on glassing in stringers, decking, etc so they were prone to rot if not treated well. Brunswick pretty much crapped up all the companies/products they bought at that time.

By the early-mid 90's Brunswick realized their name was in the gutter, and started making the boats good again. The Discovery series are outstanding boats.
