Steering Zerk question

I was servicing my boat and I hit the zerk with some grease, it must have been barely tightened, as it came off in the end of the grease hose. I can't put a new one on as the"adjuster" the large nut is too close to the zerk hole. Do I just tighten the large adjuster(not sure this is what it's called) install zerk, then back it up to where it was? What does the adjuster even do?

...come on Capt'n, you can do better than that!!!! Even the MANUAL calls it a Cable Coupler Nut !!! :eek:

(Gosh...they must give out these ranks like candy...where's Don when you need him) :D
