...a mechanical fuel pump? Or can you? It's a mechanical fuel pump on a 488r (170) Mercruiser. Suggested that the fuel pump may be seizing when warm. How can I check this?

put a fuel pressure gage in line and run it. I have never heard of a mechanical pump being temp sensative, but there is a lot I've never heard of.

And don't even think about cutting that steel fuel line to put a gauge in.
Go to an auto parts store and the the proper fittings and Tees to fit the carb, the fuel pump and the gauge.

But I would bet the problem is not the fuel pump, but the fuel system BEFORE the fuel pump.
Check it like this.
