Re: How cold...

A couple more pics. Nice Nordic ski team look going here.
I have no idea why we are smiling. We are standing in 40 degree water. My old boat had a low-profile "windshield"...it was nearly more painful to sit in the wind blast and drive the boat.

Re: How cold...

This was a great little ski boat but it had a distinct lack of wind-protection for the driver. Late September in this shot. I'm wearing my shortie wetsuit under my full wetsuit (plus a parka when driving)

The water is warmer than the air so there is an awesome fog coming off the lake.

Do they make booties to cover the feet? I know full tie up boots on a ski would keep ya warm but what about the toe plate?

Do you live on the lake? Looks like an awesome skiing lake, not to big but deeper so the waves aren't too bad.

No I don't live on the lake. I used to keep the boat in our garage and it was a quick 15 minutes from home to the public landing. Now I have FRIENDS who live on the lake. :) 160 acres, about a mile long and narrow. It is sweet.

Snow in November. There was just a bit of skim ice around the dock...

awsome pic, you and your ski buddies are very hardcore. it is 103 today, well 78 inside and that gave me the chills. you gotta love skiing to be doing it with snow on the ground and ice on the pond.

Re: How cold...

The weather smartened up a little last night and today.

Went out today. Air temp was 25C (77F). Water temp was 11C (53F). I didn't bother taking skiis because obviously I wanted to spend more time out of the water than in. So I just wakeboarded. I was able to get three runs at a time before my hands were useless and couldn't hold on to the handle. Very refreshing though!

I must be raising some sissie kids. Took my son out today to wakeboard and kneeboard, air temp about 67 F and water temp 74 F, with a clear sunny sky. He quit after just a couple of times, said it was too cold.

Re: How cold...

October 2nd. Birthday wakeboarding. 25C (77F) air, 14C (57F) water. It's been pretty nice this week, so a little warmer than last Saturday!

Absolutely no wind, it was beautiful. Plus, the weather forecast is still saying 20C to the end of next week, so perhaps some Canadian Thanksgiving boarding will be in order!

Again, a little too cold for me to learn anything new, but maybe I'll take the surf board and the kneeboard if we go next weekend for a little variety.

Oh yeah, even the kids jumped in and swam around the boat a few times.

Re: How cold...

Three years ago my kids (18 & 20)and I (50) made it our mission to ski every month of the year! We are in North Carolina... Lake Wylie bottoms out at about 48 degrees in late January and it not unusual to get a day or two with hi temp in the 60's every month. We succeeded! but January hurt - we only had shorty wetsuits. We all had dry starts from the dock but with rip rap on the shoreline - we had to end the runs in deep water. Brrrr.

A nuclear power plant dumps cooling water into a small arm of the lake that can be as much as 15 degrees hotter than other parts of the lake in the summer... I've seen 100 degree water in there in August! We thought we'd ski there but every time we went the plant was shut down during the winter!!!

Was dad in the water too? :)

I had to drive. :D

The lake we had a cabin on when I was a kid only got up to about 74 or so in the middle of the summer, while I wasn't thrilled with the cold water I learned to tolerate it. On the lake we go to now (in Georgia) I saw surface water temperatures as high as 94 this summer, that tends to spoil these kids.

This weekend nice! Surface water temp was 73 deg, morning low air temps were around 50 deg, and daytime highs were 68-75 deg. Unfortunately, I won't get to hit the water for another 3 weeks, should definately be wetsuit weather by then.

Re: How cold...

I'm new to the boating scene but I have wondered when people will say enough is enough. I surf quite a bit and it's never been too cold-granted that is in FL while wearing a 3/2 fullsuit with booties. I don't know if my wakeboarding companions will be gung Ho when the air is 45 and the water is 52...I KNOW the admiral will not be up for it!!

Those temps are around the reasonable comfort range. Even if you can generate body heat with activity, the extremities (hands you're using to hold onto the rope) get stiff and tired without good protection. Wind chill at 25-35 mph or whatever speed you're pulled at becomes a big factor too.

yipee! Cold, but warm enough to be back in the shorty wetsuit this evening. 68 degrees. unknown water temp but it was brisk! Smooth as glass as the sun went down. Heading out to ski at sunrise tomorrow. I expect 20-25 degrees cooler.

Re: How cold...

skibrain= i am convinced that if there is liquid water that you will ski on it. you sir are hardcore and keep the pics coming cause i use them to motivate my wife to go on the water. it is cooling off only a high of 89 today and she has been known to wear a sweater in 90 degree weather before. cant wait to actually learn how to ski myself. but have to make sure the wife knows how to pull me first.
