How long an extention cord do you have? It's AC, right?

Re: homemade electric boat motor

I have a couple of different plans for making trolling motors out of weed eaters, I built one a few years ago, and it pushed a 13 foot fiberglass around pretty good and got great gas mileage..

You don't like to do homework, so you scold others for not paving the way for you?

Now that is a different approach!

How cold does it get where you live?... I think that motor would make a better ice auger than anything.

... or maybe you could hook a small airplane propeller to it and make yourself an air boat?

... save it for a spare in case your wife's cake mixer bites the dust???

Re: homemade electric boat motor

im sorry i didnt know building a boat motor was top secret. I build homes from the ground up and if someone was to ask me question about any part of the construction of a house i would give them all the information i have and not tell them to go buy a modular or a pre fabricated house...i wasnt scolding anyone... this is what i thought this thread stuff was about was to share information to help other with questions they have about projects they are attempting....if i was to know any of u personally and came to you in person you would probably me more likley to help me but for some reason people create online personalities and are not willing to help because of their online EGO

Re: homemade electric boat motor

First of all you are asking about something that very few if any have ever done, and AC electric motor and water off shore seems like it would be very difficult, unless you want a large bank of batteries as well as a very large inverter..which would probably overwhelm a Jon boat.

Second right off the bat, within 4 posts of joining, you are flipping crap to others. There is no secret, and not least of all, you posted your question in the wrong area, there is an area devoted to all things electric when it comes to boats, building a electric trolling motor of any kind has nothing to do with restoring a boat.

I don't see where anyone push ego, or **** on the cadet, but you willingly offered, that you didn't want to take the time to search out an answer to your question, instead you wanted to jump on as a new person and expected someone to give you in depth details on how to build something with the wrong parts. So have at it McGyver, let us know how it goes..

Good luck in earning those stripes, cause there sure isn't anyone here that is going to give them to you!

As far as creating an online persona, I have nothing to hide.

Re: homemade electric boat motor

Ok, lets look at the practical side if this because you are right. This is a place for the free flow of ideas and information.

1) You mentioned using an inverter. Yes that will work to power the AC motor - after you fill your jon boat with batteries, if the boat isn't overloaded and go down. Not practical.

2) An alternative powering method - Put a gas powered generator in the jon boat. I have no idea how big a gen set you would need to meet the wattage requirements for said AC motor. I guess you could use the gen set to sit on too. Don't burn your leg on the exhaust.

3) Get a 1-3 hp outboard and rip the power head off and rig some kind of coupling to the leg. It has been done with gas mower and weed whacker engines before. Shouldn't be too hard to rig and electric motor.

So there you have it. You put it all together with a boat load of batteries and very unstable or a noisy generator you can sit on.

And what do you have - a trolling motor. And not a very practical one at that. But you have live with it. And yes - please do some homework.

As I am retired, I don't consider my minutes wasted, I choose to do what I want with my minutes, as based on your attitude, I suspect you may be choose what to do with your minutes in the future, albeit on another boating forum...as far as the pencil holder and glasses, never owned either as I was a field officer and never pushed a desk until after I had an unfortunate meeting with a AK-47 round in Bagdad, Iraq. The only desk I use even in these days, is the one that I compose my urban combat class schedule on when doing my consulting duties with the Military, I still spend most of my time in the field.

Re: homemade electric boat motor

Setting aside getting it onto a leg and prop for a moment, HMM, you are going to have expensive and dangerous things to deal with.

That motor requires 115-120VAC at 15-20 amps and it is not shielded from spray. That is a sure short-out with sparks and maybe flames if any water gets into it.

To get your 115 VAC at 15-20 amps you will need a 2-2.5 KILOwatt inverter drawing 200-300 amps from a 12 volt battery. Even a golf cart battery wouldn't last an hour.

Cost? You could buy several excellent trollers for just the price of the inverter, never mind the battery.

I remember how frustrating it was in my youth when old timers tried to explain to me why my schemes would not work, but they were always right. When I became an engineer it was obvious why they wouldn't work. What made the difference? Physics, mostly.

I admire your creative spirit. Don't lose that. Get the needed education, and in the meantime, believe the old timers, they know what they are talking about.

Good luck. :)

Re: homemade electric boat motor

I was serious about the ice auger.

... and a fan to push your boat would be easier to make and more feaseable than an outboard type motor.

Whittle down a scrap 4' 2x4 off the job, mount it to the shaft with a pin and you're gone!

You maybe be right about posting in the wrong place though...

This might be a better spot for your idea.

GA_Boater Thank you your information was helpful, this is what I came here for! Sincerly!

MTboatguy I am not going to feel bad about making a joke in reference to post hiearchy and labels that are given on here based on the amount of post someone has submitted. I was not talking about the real military...Sorry you got shot with an AK
