Re: Here We Go: My 383 Stroker Winter Project

in 2 years of looking myself, I have only seen one set of used CMI's and they were nearly the cost of new. I am saving my Sheckels for my set of CMI and exhaust diverters this summer.

I think he is hopeful for some used ones...

Joe is spot on here. The small block headers are on CP Performance for $2400 polished or $2000 satin finish, but that's out of my price range for now. I've been looking on ebay and craigslist for CMI, IMCO, and Stainless Marine every day without any luck. I'll try posting a wanted ad and see what comes up. CP Performance also offers some stainless risers for $750 that I may go ahead and get if I can't find something by May - they claim to add 10hp above the stock risers.

True... and if I sell my manifolds and risers I could probably get another 300 or so.

I still have the fully assembled heads, old crank, pistons, and intake from the original engine. Are those parts worth anything? I posted them on craigslist once and got no hits. Any idea what I could get for them?

I sold my old heads, intake, (cam, lifters, pushrods), timing gear and chain, carb, flame arrester, fuel line, on ebay.

I would think after the weather up your way warms up and folks realize they didn't winterize properly, the heads/intake will be easy to get rid of.

Not a bad idea. For the heavy stuff (heads and intake) I'd rather do it locally to pocket the shipping costs instead of reducing the sale price. I'll try posting the cam lifters timing chain pushrods and carb on ebay. You really think someone will want a stock flat tappet cam/lifters with 750 hours on it?

Very good point Joe. I'll keep posting them on craigslist and see what comes up. Maybe buying these CMI's won't be as hard on the wallet as I thought.

I'd mic the lobes and bearing surfaces. If its worn, than yea harder sell. I sold the cam/lifters/push-rods as one auction. Don't remember what I got, but was more than I expected. At one point, I thought if I listed the old head gaskets, someone would buy them!

I agree with Joe, the next two months there should be a surge of getting boats ready.

CL in my area, doesn't seem to sell that well. Dealing with some of the people, phone and in person, can be a joy! Good luck.

Re: Here We Go: My 383 Stroker Winter Project

CL takes a little getting used to but i always hated ebay... Anyway I have had great luck here in Texas and have sold thousands of dollars worth of Auto related parts, tools, a couple of cars in the last two years.

With the exception of the cars, i never bring anyone to my home or shop. I always make people email me first through craigslist, then i send them my phone number and email to their email. I never put my phone number or email in the add.

I always put the items in my truck bed and meet them at a nearby well lit 7-11 parking lot. Seems a little paranoid but I've heard some weird stories.

We also sold all of our "baby" stuff off as my youngest daughter outgrew them. We had 3 of everything, 2 grandmas Lol
The baby stuff goes 10 times as fast a car parts Lol

sorry got a little off topic

Those "Eddie Marine" the second one's are nice because they have a dry joint. A friend of mine is a dealer for them and has had good luck with them.

Re: Here We Go: My 383 Stroker Winter Project

Are they made for performance? I assume it is an upgrade from the stock manifolds but how would it compare to a CMI or IMCO header? I like the ones with a stainless riser.

Ive never seen any performance tests/comparisons, but the emi is going to be very similar to the imco power flow, divided runners. It wont make as much power as the cmi which is an actual individual runner header. For your combo i think the emi is a nice match. If i were doing what you are doing i would go with that. They have a pretty nice catalog you can get from their web site.

Before pulling the trigger i would call and ask them which of the three risers you would be best with.
I cant remember if you are running thru hull or switchable.

Yea all of the ebay auctions say to call before ordering so they can make sure all the right brackets and such are put in the package. I'll give them a call and talk about which would be best. I am running a switchable exhaust - I actually had some pipes custom made last year because I couldn't find one that would fit the location of my risers and Y-pipe. Hopefully they can be adapted to fit whatever combo I end up buying.

Id call Eddie marine direct, that ebay add is a dealer. Eddie M. will no doubt know more about them. They will probably ask you to buy from a dealer though.

Im Running a set os Stainless Marine Manifolds on my 383. Water jackets go far down the pipe so no reversion issues.

Im not 100% sure theres a huge performance difference in a decent set of after market manifolds vs the more expensive header type. Given your boat/power. Its going to take significantly more HP to = any material MPH.

Yea, adding another 10-20 horse with headers probably won't get me any noticeable speed gains. I'll probably buy either the IMCO thumper system or the eddie marine system mentioned above. I'm going to make a decision by tomorrow and just order them - it's almost boating season and I want to launch early to take care of the break-in.

Re: Here We Go: My 383 Stroker Winter Project

of the manifolds, imco powerflows make the most, eddy marine's are close to a copy of the imcos and make a little less. stainless marine are on par with the emi's, the long tube headers a bit more than the imcos but only at higher rpms. I don't remember the specific numbers for the comparison or even if he told me exact numbers. If buying new, the imcos were enough better to be worth the coin, the headers weren't enough better to spend the extra. they were all run on a 383 with about 10:1 compression, iron heads, single plane intake and around 400-425 horsepower. I wound up with a set of powerflows. new manifolds I found on craigslist for 600, used risers off ebay for 200. They run great and have held up well. stainless headers sometimes crack and are a bear to repair or so they tell me. and they didn't make a lot more power on the dyno according to the man...

btw. project looks like it's coming together well!

Greg: How fast were you before this build?

I gained 18-19 MPH gps. But my comp cams xtreme Marine 262 poops out (floats valves) at exactly 5000rpm. Which might actually be safer for myself AND my Alpha. Although Ive heard of people spining them alot higher.
