Hi guys,
I recently bought a 1990 5hp, When i bought it the guy said that his son had used it and it had stopped running and would not start again...
When he pulled the plugs there was water in there. Does this mean the head gasket has gone?
He also removed the fuel pump, i have put a second hand one back on and there is fuel getting to the spark plugs.
I have a 1973 25hp outboard in the shed waiting to be over hauled, it has new plugs in it, can i use these in my 5hp to test if it will run?
I have checked the 5hp and it is sparking and there is fuel getting to head.
If the head gasket has gone will the engine not fire ?
Any help will be much appreciated

I believe the water was removed within hours of the engine stopping, i can get it to turn over and spark, plus fuel to flow it just wont fire up..
Gear box is all free and working, is it due to lack of compression?

Well engine is running, old fuel was the problem......
But the impellor was a bit seized up, have finally got the gearbox off but i had to cut 2 of the bolts, front bolt and one of the rear 2..
Impellor was full of sand and salt, i am planning to clean it all thoroughly in the morning.
Is it easy to drill the old bolts out and are they easy to come by?

Well an update, Engine pumps water like a trooper.

I have removed the head and the gasket, the water ways were full of salt so i have cleaned that all out..

On the gasket fire ring i believe, there are signs of a brown discoloration, is this the head leaking water into the cylinder and will this be the cause of the small amount of water in the head causing poor running?

is there anywhere else i should be looking too ?

Also when it is running in the tank im getting a scum on the top of the water like yellowish single cream!!!

Drat, the secret to clotted cream is finally out.:p

A compression test would have been in order before removing the cyl head.
Otherwise inspect gasket , clean everything out and reinstall new gasket, then do a compression test. LEaking gaskets are usually obvious just looking at them. If it has exhaust cover gaskets they can leak water into cylinders too.

Also neither Johnson nor Evinrude made a 5hp in 1990.
Post your model number so we can look up the parts diagram.

Engine model number: BJ5DRESR

The head gasket didnt look that bad apart from some brown discoloration.
Should i pull the exhaust gasket too?
Any why is the water getting this yellowy oily slick in it?
