I have read trough this post and I have seen everything mentioned except the nut in front of the trim tab. There is the nut under the trim that you have mentioned but there is still the nut in front of the trim tab. Do you have that one out?

I've read over this thread... and it has not been mentioned whether or not the shift linkage has been disconnected... Maybe this is what's holding things together. Might make sure that's it's disconnected before doing anything drastic.<br /><br />My engine has sat for 30+ years, until last month, when I changed the water pump impeller. The only problem I had with taking the lower unit off was that I had forgotten to disconnect the shift linkage. Did *that*, and it lowered like a champ.<br /><br />Just my .02 cents.<br /><br />Rex

To ALL of you guys.....<br /><br />I just got home from work and could not believe my eyes. All of you - I can't thank enough for your thoughts on my problem!<br />I will get started on your suggestions asap.(after supper) I wish I could have everybody over for a fishfry...cool ! Well Folks......I thank each and every one of you for trying to help get this l/u off.<br />It is still on. I have pulled, pryed, smacked, banged, tugged, and literally pounded on the thing. I have tried every trick you all have suggested. I have spent hours going over and over every inch, thinking there might be something I forgot. But, I'm afraid it's not going to happen. DMZ, is the impeller still functional at all?<br />If so, i would loosen it up,start it in a barrel,and rock it forword/reverse/forward/reverse until it freed-up. It must be solidly frozen to the crank shaft at the spline, and this trick worked for me (albeit, only had to throw it into forward and reverse one time). but sooner or later,gravity and vibration has to have a positive effect on your problem.<br />But all I can do is wish you success. Throw a cover over it,so you don't have to look at it for about a week..Then attack it again,when it aint lookin.<br />Good luck .

Dmz<br />The driveshaft housing (housing between powerhead and lower gear housing) typically has screws holding on the skirt or dressing just under the powerhead. Remove one which lines up best with the driveshaft. Image where the driveshaft is by looking at the flywheel. Turn engine UPSIDE down. Empty a can of penetrating oil in the hole (be sure the hole goes into housing) Bend the spray straw to aim at the driveshaft if needed. Empty the hole can. Its gonna leak down to the splines if you hit the shaft. Leave sit for couple days and try slide hammer again......Its gonna come.....just be persistant.....(don't go cheap on the penetrating oil)<br /><br />Good luck!

Schematic........<br />Great Idea. You sure know your stuff. I'll pick up some good penetrating oil tomorow. Any suggestions on a good brand? Also, Don't know if I can tip engine upsidedown. It is on the boat pretty good.... Thanx again. This is getting VERY frustrating. I am getting withdrawl symptoms from no Speck Fishing... Dmz.

Don't care which brand as long as it has a straw for a spray nozzle. Remember, you have to line up with the shaft. This may mean shaping the straw to fit your circumstance. Again......don't be cheap, empty the whole can....<br /><br />Some Merc's have a pipe plug under the shroud at the rear. If nothing else works, remove the plug, and with the engine upside down and on a 45 deg angle, fill up with diesel fuel and let sit straight upside down. Leave it a couple days....then slide hammer.

Just Great.... Can anyone tell me if it is possible to fix broken pieces of fin that break off from trying to pry the lower unit apart from the drive case...!!!!!! I give up!

DMZ,<br /><br />The last Merc. I tried to replace the impeller on was a vintage near yours but a 50 hp. It had seen alot of salt water use.<br /><br />The driveshaft wasn't stainless steel and it had swelled itself up to three time it's normal diameter with rust.<br /><br />Can you see the shaft?
