if nothing is holding gearcase but driveshaft<br />i use 4 small strips of sheetmetal (coilstock)& cut 2 wood wedges. sheetmetal <br />(1)on each side of wedge top & bottom then one wedge on each side of gearcase drive wedges in evenly done carfully it has worked <br />flawlessly half dozen times for me i hope description of my method works for you <br />goodluck THE UPSIDEDOWN W/PENATRENT SOUNDS GOOD TOO<br /> <br /> (FISHTREMBLEATTHESOUNDOFMYNAME)

Thanx djohns19 and sawcat,<br /><br />No, I can't see the shaft. The unit is not open far enough yet. As for the Shim method, I will try asap. But, let me ask a question. In my manual it describes the removal of the lowe unit for other, smaller motors than mine. It says in all other units that the shift shaft must be disengaged in various ways. However, for my 40hp, there is NO mention of loosening or disengaging the shift-shaft rod or otherwise. Do you think this is correct, or am I missing something somewhere? Dmz.

DMZ<br /><br />Your shift shaft is splined....nothing to disconnect. If the unit actually comes down 1/8" all around, it means you must have all the bolts out......

If it were me I would take it to a dealer,<br />before you break something. If you bend that drive shaft the repair may be more than the motor is worth.

REJOICE....REJOICE..!!!!!<br /><br />AS OF 2:15 PM Eastern Time ...I am the proud owner of a bouncing baby LOWER UNIT..!!!!<br />To ALL of you who gave me incite and inspiration... I thank you. You are all good people. After several days of lubricating, tapping, pulling, hitting, prying and grinding my teeth, the unit dropped. I now am faced with the problem of getting the water pump BASE pryed out of the seat. It is also very stuck...Can anyone tell me if the water pump & fuel pump come in Kits or do I ask for separate gaskets and seals etc. Thanks again, DMZ....

You're Merc dealer should have rebuild kits for both the fuel pump and water pump. I don't recall all the previous posts...so please refresh my memory here. Why do you suspect you need to rebuild your fuel pump? <br /><br />Congrats on getting your lower unit removed. This should serve as a good lesson to all of us in here that a little (ok, a lot) of perseverance and patience goes a long way. Good job...<br /><br />Walt

Exelent! Good job! Mybe I can quit gruntin and pullin with you. It should be pretty much down hill form here. How do your drive shaft splines look? Is shaft non stainless? Was the rubber o-ring (slinger) still at the top of the shaft? When you order your parts grab a tube of anti corrosion greese. I moore in salt water year round,haul out annually,and never have stuck anything.Let us know how you make out. Good luck!

Thanx Walter, and Alcan....<br /><br />Walter...Part of my initial problem was a drop in power after planing-out.. Had some folks say maybe the pump, maybe electrical. While I was in the mood, went ahead and pulled the diaphragm out of the fuel pump. Looked a bit stretched. <br />Alcan....the drive looked in pretty good shape. Looks to be stainless. Not any rust. Splines look good, just filled with some hardened grease material. The rubber slinger did not come out with the shaft. It must be still up inside? Thanx again you guys..Dmz.

Hello Everyone,<br /><br />Just an update to let all you helpfull folks know I am putting the lower unit back together after a harrowing time trying to get it off. I still need a trick to get the prop off. It is still froze on the shaft and is not showing signs of giving-in. Thanx again for everyone's help... DMZ

You probably won't like this idea,But if it were me I would just carefully cut that sucker off. I use a die grinder and a sharp chisel. props aren't that expensive compaired to the damage that could be done trying to pull one off. Besides you have torcherd your self enough allready.Let the money work on this one.Lets get that thing back in the water. Good luck catch lots of fish!
