The old tinny runabout is undergoing a transformation to a side console fishing boat. The old style runabout had a long covered bow which put the steering wheel farther back than current models. How can I determine where to position the new helm for best balance? Also, I'm switching from the old cable pulley type steering to Teleflex. What is the minimum width the helm can be and still have room for the Teleflex steering to work?

That depends on your choice of helm...

Re: helm questions

I thought the closed bows tended to have the steering further forward than a side console.

If you go with a rotary helm. I don't think you need a lot of space at all.

You are correct about the steering position. What I meant to say and maybe wasn't clear, is that the steering is further back than a current style runabout. I want to go even further back using a side console. What I don't know is how far back I can go and still maintain reasonable front-rear balance. The boat is a narrow 14' semi V, model 1432. Any knowledge / opinions welcomed.
