Hand Wheel Coupler Works Way Loose

I just don't know why. It works its way loose no matter how hard I turn it clockwise to lock. Maybe it's old. I can't find a cheap replacement part either. I'd love to switch to a latch coupler, but not a welder. Not sure.

they make bolt on couplers. just use good grade 8 bolts..

Do you know what brand it is. Maybe you just need a new lock like this.

Would I have to somehow cut off the old hand wheel end them drill holes for the coupler to bolt on?

The ones I have used in the past had a leaver thing that was under the wheel that was sort of a spring that you have to push down on to allow the wheel to be turned, the leaver locked into slots on the under side of the wheel. You may be able to buy a full coupler for the parts. If I remember right the shaft that the wheel goes on has a cut away flat spot and that is what holds the leaver in place.

Drill bit- what size?

Bolts, bits and washers- locking washers? What size?

Sounds like it may need to be done in a shop!?

So what is the minimum type of bolt I'll need and what size for the trailer coupler? Length and width? I have no idea on this type of stuff, ugh...

Here's my plan as of now:

Buy hacksaw, cut off welded old trailer coupler hand crank that is junk. Put on new coupler. Drill two holes. Bolt on with two screws. Done?

Another stupid question... if I buy the coupler are trailer sizes pretty standard? Should it fit on the trailer?

To size it for a new one measure the existing tubing its on, then start hunting.Their sized by the size tubing its bolted or welded to and the load it pulls like A CLASS 2 , 3 ,4 or 5

Is it possible to switch out the hand wheel coupler to a new latch modern one? Is it tough or even possible?
It's just a trailer end with a 1 7/8 spot for ball. Can the hardware just be taken out for hand wheel and switch to latch or am I way off???

I think I'm looking for this for a 1 and 7/8 ball area on trailer but can't find it ANYWHERE online or in store. Anyone?

Since its nowhere to be found online. Anyone have a MCGiver like suggestion to keep the bottom part of coupler attached to top of handwheel with missing spring and latch lock???

When it comes to towing, no mater how big or small, safety should be at the fore front of your mind. If you cannot guarantee that your trailer will be safely and securely attached to the tow vehicle then its time to get a new coupler unit. Get it fixed right and you wont have any more concerns.
