The ol' Gulfstream is finally looking like a boat. Today I undertook and finished installing the Nautolex Flooring. Some have tried it and don't care for it but my original Nautolex wore so well that I couldn't see any reason to not reuse it. It has great no skid properties (very hard on the knees) it doesn't hold onto water and it cleans very easily. It won't hold onto seaweed or sand and I think it is attractive.

I obtained a gallon of vinyl glue from a local upholsterer for $15.00, sprayed it on with my old binks knockoff sprayer, (both surfaces) spread down the vinyl and tucked the edges up under the lip of the interior gunwales. Done deal. I was amazed that I was able to just spray on the glue. You can still see the original Nautolex in the side pockets. I have enough new material to redo those but I won't do it until I have the motor in and the boat test driven.

I wish so many of the other operations had been so straightforward and easy. Tomorrow the front seat assemblies get bolted down.

Looks nice, mate. Does that go under your dam, or just up to it? If it goes under, will water leak "under" the dam?

BTW, project's going nice.

Thanks Rob. Originally I was going to stop the vinyl at the front edge of the dam/deflector. But as the vinyl is well glued to the floor, I decided that a nice bead of Vulkum polyeurethane caulking would keep the water from running between the dam and the vinyl. I got a nice squeeze out when I screwed it down. It looks a lot cleaner too. It's not easy to make a good clean cut around a contour like that.

Also I figured that should the dam ever need to be removed, that it would come up off the vinyl easier than off the fiberglassed floor.

Thanks Aldo, but we do things on the flip side up on this side of the equator. I have carpet in my kitchen but I'll be d******* if I'm gonna put it in my boat. :p

Got a head of steam up now. The front seat assemblies are now in and solidly anchored thru the floor into their respective 2 x 6 blocks. This is the first time in many a year that the seats are rock solid and do not wiggle back and forth.

Here is the detail of the seat assembly risor blocks (shown previously after painting them) that I made to elevate the seats to a more comfortable level. The intent was to make them look like a factory installation.

I just gave the motor a coat of Rust Doctor this afternoon. It being a salvage yard motor it had a lot of surface rust. (they don't paint the blocks anymore) I tried wire brushing but I didn't want to be there for the next week. Rust Doctor ties up the rust to make it inactive.

Tomorrow I will put the coat of Glyptol on it and Friday I hope to give it the final coat of POR15. I'll let it cure up over the weekend, then next week bolt the intermediate housing to it and hoist her in.

Then the new set of fun begins. All of the engine periferals, wiring and outdrive. At least I'll be able to do all that in the side yard as opposed to driving halfway across the county to get it painted.

Splashdown, I hope, will be toward the end of the first week in August.

looks great!
Thinking about replacing my carpet in my Sylvan with easier to maintain floor covering such as the Nautolex.

Good luck with the engine.

Mike

Looks great, although I think you just wanted to show off your super spiffy ultra sweet rockin' dam-a-majigger you built :) . Great job....

Yeah Jason, I have to admit, it is worth a few repeated looks. Especially with that coat of white paint against the new flooring. Plus everytime I look at it I know that my grand kids will eventually still be able to drive this boat. :p

Re: Gulfstream Update-THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE HAS BEEN BROKEN!

What a relief. My motor is finally painted. It was just before this point that my 331 cid motor was uncerimoniously ripped from my grasp so I'm glad I've gotten to and past this stage.

The first picture is after priming the motor with Glyptol. A very good high temperature insulating primer that will aid in keeping the rust in check when the motor sweats.

The topcoat is POR15 Ford Thunderbird red. The digital makes it look kind of orangy, but it is red. I really love using my HVLP gun. It just does not make a mess and you can direct a narrow cone of spray right into to tight niches and nooks. Notice the board under the motor in the first picture. If I had used my Binks style syphon gun, that board would have had orange/brown overspray all over it.

I can hardly wait to see it sitting in my white bilge. I will let it cure for the weekend then next week I will attach the intermediate housing and hoist it into the boat.

Re: Gulfstream Update-THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE HAS BEEN BROKEN!

Tengals, that does seem to be a common affliction lately, doesn't it? ;)

Jason, my friend said "you are going to alot of trouble to make something pretty that no one will see." (under motor cover)

I told him that I will see it and that's all that really counts. After all this work I don't want to open that cover and see an ugly mess.

The trick is now to get it's 4 feet dropped down on top of the predrilled holes with out scarring up those beautiful white rails.

whole project:
http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,92,00.html

Sharp eye Realgun. I wondered if anyone would pick that up.

Aktually, it was. The morning after I gave it the Rust Doctor treatment I saw the puddle on the floor. Thought it was the hydraulics from the lift. As the motor got a new oil pan, I knew there was no oil in the engine so I ruled that out.

The next day after the prime coat, there was another puddle. I scratched my head. got a drain pan and a wrench to remove the plug and ended up turning it out by hand. It was just a little residual oil coming out of the top end and dripping thru the loose drain plug.

Just wait till you see it with my beeeeeutiful ebay finned aluminum Ford valve covers, all decked out with a shiney black coat of POR15.
