Re: Grease leaking around buddy bearing

It seems as I somehow misplaced the original dust caps. I see on etrailer that they are $3-$6 depending on diameter. I'll be running home pretty soon and would like to measure and find out which ones to order. They have 2", 2.44", 2.72". What measurement is this? The inner diameter of the hub where the buddy bearing is installed?

There is no reason not to leave these Buddy Bearings on. The slight amount of seepage you see is nothing to worry about. Just wipe it up.

Even with the axle you have, the Bearing Buddys can still keep a positive pressure in your hub which is their main purpose

Well, they would block access to the zerks on the spindles, but that's not a big deal I guess.

Once you put grease in with the spindle lube zerk, not sure why you really need to be adding more grease very often.

Agreed, and accessing that zerk when necessary would be a simple matter.

The only time its bad to have a bearing buddy is when you get overzealous with the grease gun. I have had bearing buddys for over 30 years. Never once blown a rear seal.

Bruce would you recommend putting anything around that crevice to keep from slinging all that grease every trip? Maybe a bead of silicone, something that won't make it hard to get the bearing buddys off later?

You could do that I guess. How long does it take it to get that way? Doesn't look that bad to me but, then again, I don't have fancy trailer wheels like you do! :)

Not long at all. It looks like that after a 30 mile tow on the interstate. I just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be consequences to using silicone. I've slowly learned that with this boat (and maybe any boat), even making small assumptions usually leads to big problems.

I'd be concerned about the Bearing Buddies falling out.

let me rephrase that took the hub cap off and no grease was slung from being towed.
took the rubber seal off and she was still packed with grease put a couple pumps of grease in till i saw the grease pushing through less then a quarter tube on the whole trailer

on a side note while greasing your bearings dont forget to lube up the jack stand and swing away tongue

Skydive, it's possible there's not a Bearing Buddy available with a close enough tolerance to truly fit. To expound on what I said about their potentially falling out; if there's enough space for grease to seep out around them they're probably not as tight as they need to be. If you want to leave them in I'd suggest having some kind of spares handy.

Re: Grease leaking around buddy bearing

I had some hubs that I couldn't keep a buddy bearing in. The hubs were the ones that came with my crappy Tie-Down disc brakes. When I switched over to my Kodiacs, I never had an issue. More than likely that particular hub may be the issue and not the buddy bearing.

In my mind there is no issue. The hubs were designed to accept EZ Lube dust caps, not BBs. As you said, shouldn't be any problem with leaving the BBs in, but if they do fall out I know I'd rather replace them with the three dollar dust caps they were designed to use. JMO.

Hubs are independent of the ez-lube axle. You can use any hubs with them. For example, if you bought Kodiac brakes, you would use the integral hub/disc that they come with.

LOL. Fair enough. What he currently has appears to have been designed for use with EZ Lube dust caps. It is possible those are the only style of cover that will work. Uncle.
