Re: Grease leaking around buddy bearing

You asked about applying some silicone around the BB in the front to alleviate the grease seepage. And that answer is yes. HOWEVER, unless you clean both the BB AND the hub areas extremely clean the silicone will never stay. If you take some Lacquer Thinner or even some Acetone (don’t use mineral spirits) and clean any and all grease and oil from those areas then you could apply a little small bead around the BB and smooth it out. That will stop any grease from reappearing, and if those BB are loose, it will also help keep them attached. JMHO!

Some Permatex aviation gasket sealant might work as well.

or weld then on

:decision: Well there you go. You can weld the BB's on ORRRRR you could even get some simple dust caps and drill them for zerk grease fittings and grease them that way....

or replace the Bearing Buddies with the dust caps that are meant to go on there and have removable rubber plugs for accessing the zerks.........wait, isn't that how all this got started?

The only time its bad to have a bearing buddy is when you get overzealous with the grease gun. I have had bearing buddys for over 30 years. Never once blown a rear seal.

X3 -- make that 40 years!

Thanks for all the replies. I checked the rear seals today and dont see any signs of problems. No grease anywhere except where shown in the pictures. The plan is to clean up and try to seal with silicone or something similar. I will be sure to carry the original dust caps as spares, and if I continue to have trouble ill put them back on.

The swing away tongue is now on my list actually. I had to use it over the winter and couldn't get the locking bolt out without a damn sledgehammer!
