Nice Starchief! It's hard to believe what you did on her since August. A lot of hard work and sweat in her. Get her wet. :D

Re: Got me a Starchief

Thanks Guys. I'm really glad I got the Yamaha, I think it's going to do just fine compared to the 50 Merc I started with. I'm also really liking the idea of the tilt and trim...I can't believe how much of a hardhead I was at the beginning of this project about motor size and tilt and trim. Well maybe I can:D

Re: Got me a Starchief

Murphy. Is alive on New Jersey's Riviera. The last thing I wanted to take care of before splashing this weekend was to add some fluid to the tilt/trim. Raised up the motor, added some fluid, went to lower motor, stuck. Tried to open manual release valve, stuck. So here's a link to my thread on the Yamaha outboard page..... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=562493

And a pic, just cause we like them here...

A dumb question - Is the circled/arrowed red lever a tilt lock? Maybe it dropped into lock when the motor was tilted all the up. If you had a Merc I could be more helpful. Sorry, I took PC drawing lessons from Jason.

Re: Got me a Starchief

Thanks guys, there are no stupid questions.
Jim, yes it's stuck. No up or down. Tilt pump motor makes noise like it's running, but no motion.
GA, yes that is a tilt lock. Very much like the one's on a Merc. The one on the port side is actually stuck in place to not be an issue, the one on the starboard has enough friction to not drop into locked position. I was really hoping that was the problem.
I'm wondering if I take off the lines connecting the cylinders if it will release pressure and let it come down.

I took those lessons too

Some practice drawing. I see it doesn't improve.

If you use the tilt lock or support the lower unit and loosen one or both of the lines on the tilt cylinder, it should (hopefully) relieve the pressure and release the lock/support it should drop. Remember, this is coming from a guy who moves a pin to change the trim. Maybe one of the Yammy guys will chime in on the other thread.

Thanks GA. Pretty skillful on the writing, I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that, otherwise I'd be cleaning my 'puter screen!
This motor is my first power tilt/trim. I'm hoping one of the Yammy guys has some ideas. I searched the threads over there, I'm not the first to have this problem, but the others were unanswered.
The thought tonight is just get the thing down. I'm perfectly willing to move the pin for test splashing and even some usage. I just want to get this boat floatin!

Re: Got me a Starchief

cracking the line connections should let you bleed some fluid out, but wrap a rag around connection first as it's under pressure....hate to see it make a mess of that beautiful boat.

Yup, cracked the lines, made a mess, motor dropped down. I'm back on schedule for early saturday splash. Out to take a couple non essential pics now.

Is the trim working now or it just dropped down? I'll skip the practice writing for now.

I guess I left out that important info. It just dropped down, not working. I was kind of hoping that after it dropped and was refilled it would heal itself. No such luck. I may have picked the wrong line to loosen though. When the fluid started spraying the trim cylinders dropped first. Maybe if I had drained the tilt one, the trims would still work. I just don't know. Hydraulics are a mystery to me. From what I read in the manual, I'm thinking there is a clogged/stuck valve inside. Right now the goal is to splash using the old pin moving method, and rebuild the tilt/trim unit in the future, maybe even wait until winter.
Here's a pic of the line I loosened. I cleaned up the mess before taking the pic....

Re: Got me a Starchief

It probably didn't matter which line was opened because the same pressure is applied to the trim cylinders and the tilt cylinder. I think there is a limit valve that blocks the pressure when the tilt is all the way up. It protects the pump, cylinders and lines from overpressure if the up tilt switch is held.. I'm just going back in my memories when I did some hydraulic work in the service, That was only 40+ years ago. Yikes, I'm old. When did that happen?

Re: Got me a Starchief

I'm not familiar with hydraulics in tilt or trim, I'm too cheap I guess. But in hvy equipment it could be a couple things. It could be something as simple as an air bubble in the line that has to be bled out. Loosen the line as near the cylinder as possible and slowly run the pump to let the fluid push the air and fluid out. Makes a mess but it will get the air out. More than likely there is a problem with the pump. Unhook the line going away from the pump and run it briefly to see if oil shoots out. If it doesn't you need someone to work on the pump. The noise you hear doesn't mean the electric motor is turning, or pump is pumping. As I say tho, I've never dealt with hydraulics in an outboard.

Re: Got me a Starchief

I think the fix for the TnT is to just take it apart and replace seals o-rings and clean the valves. According to the repair manual it's symptoms indicate pretty much any one of the internal valves or seals could be bad or leaking. From looking through the threads in the Yamaha outboard section I pretty much think that the hardest part of the rebuild is to remove the caps from the cylinders and getting the manual release valve out. For now I'll lift it manually.
In other news, I splashed today. Twice. I forgot the camera, but here's a couple from my friend's phone...

The Yamaha did great. at 5500 rpm it hit 29mph on gps. I'm not sure I should mess with the prop or not, I may wait until I get the trim working. Anyway, I better get some sleep. Getting up at 4:30 for splash #3 to try to catch some fish :)
