Wow, only $300! And you can lay down and probably get wet! Oh wait, theres also no seats, which probably means no support! What a great deal...

http://up.craigslist.org/boa/2557555940.html

12ft wooden "john" boat - $300 (Soo, Sault, SSM)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
no seats
oar locks and oars included
can have a motor put on it
perfect duck hunting boat so you can lay down when waiting without navigating around built in seats
hasn't been in the water in awhile so seams should be checked before using it.
No trailer included but fits perfectly into the back of a full size pickup.
When responding by email put JOHN BOAT as subject or you will be ignored
300 o.b.o.
Thank You

I'm not sure what is scarier, the fact that its homemade or that someone thought OSB would make a good boat? OSB would be the last thing I'd think to build a boat out of.
I guess $5.71 per sheet at Home Depot and some wood glue makes that thing pretty much all profit.

Rode n.Nautical. A rope, especially one attached to an anchor of a small boat.

I remember the first time I ever saw that used in that context. I thought it was a typo ... or the guy was stupid.

It's not so funny when *I* turn out to be the ignorant one. :)

Remember that most of Lincoln's humor were stories that he told at his own expense and he was never considered "ignorant."

I always had thought that "rode" was the TERM used to describe the AMOUNT of line from the boat to the anchor... and not specifically the anchor LINE.

thus you needed say 100 feet of rode to anchor in say 30 feet of water..... while your anchor line maybe 300 feet, 200 obviously still on board!!

That had always been my understanding too until I started looking up the definition on several reputable sites. It seems that rode is the line attached to the anchor chain regardless of length but when used in conjuction with scope it is the amount of line actually payed out. I guess I am not too old to learn something new.

Yep, traveled 3 hours and $100 to find a boat with a non-working motor. But it was told to me that it is "WATER READY"

Sorry to be a PITA, but... the term 'rode' applies to the total length of chain-only, rope-only, or chain-rope combination, between the anchor and the 'bitter end' of your ground tackle. If you possess 100' of rope attached to 10' of chain, you have 110' of anchor rode. Don't know what you mean by saying 'when used in conjunction with scope'- if you have 60' deployed, then you have 60' of rode paid out... but you still have 110' of rode.

This one looks a little fishy to me. Notice whats missing on the hull.

This picture looks like it was taken when it arrived at the dealership.

1. No registration numbers and validation decal

2. Were windshields an option on this boat

3. It is hard to tell from the picture but is it an I/O or is that a jackplate on the stern without a motor attached.

Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

I found this thread pretty hilarious. I have seen some doozy's but have had relatively good luck with boat purchases off of CL. Have found some great deals...particularly on really nice older boats...but I never spend much through CL, mostly low buck stuff.
