EDIT im sorry to lie about the high fives, but i have a major problem

I have a 1965 seahorse 18hp, the last time i took it out it ran fine but it had a violent rock/jerk as i was traveling through the water was very weird, then as i was heading in i took out a crab pot the pot got all tangled in the prop and i had to cut it off with snips, the motor was starting on 1 or 2 pulls but now it wont start at all any ideas im planning on taking a look at it tomorrow thanks again

Start out by checking for spark.
Did the crab pot actually stall the engine, you might check the flywheel key to make sure it didn't shear.

As Daviet says , check the flywheel key for being sheared. You can do that without pulling the flywheel.

not a clue man, i took out the plug put my finger over the whole and turned the fly wheel and i still have compression idk how much though. but when i saw i didnt even know what to think, the motors 57 years old so idk if it was cracked and the jerk of hitting the pot and stalling out was the last straw but please somebody HHHEEEEELLLLPPPPP me. ive got some fish to slay

That is ODD.Did you take it apart, for some reason ,it almost looks like it was hit from outside, specially if theres no rod bolt, cap or bearings

Re: Free hi fives

i just got the motor about 2 mos ago from some guy on CL but all thats been done so far is the fuel lines replaced, rebuilt carbs, and some other minor stuff. I just noticed it today so took off the carb and the plate with all the flapper valves in it off so i could get a better look at it, im going to call around tomorrow to see about getting it welded up since i have the piece. I found a power head off i believe was a 57 18hp for around $90

Re: Free hi fives

INCREDIBLE!!!! I've NEVER seen the intake come apart like that! Did it backfire? Were there piston parts in there? Any unidentified debris? It's very strange for it to do that from the inside. I think it's weldable, but I'd recommend finding the cause before making repairs!

i really didnt look at it extremely well i was still kind of in shock but just from the quick view in there everything seemed to be in order, Ive never gotten that deep in an outboard. Ill run out and take some more pics.

Unless I'm wrong, from your pics it looks like part of a rod in there at an angle.

Re: Free EDIT hi fives

if i remember right from earlier today when i spun the flywheel that spun aswell, and looked even the whole time it spun kind of like a wheel that is offset inward at the top of it. but ive never been this far into an outboard so im not 100%

Re: Free EDIT hi fives

Just for the heck of it, try doing a compression check on it even if you have to use a rope on it.

with a compression tester? i stuck my finger over the spark plug hole and felt like pretty good compression, but i only did the top plug and not the bottom
