Flotation Foam?

All of my seat boxes had flotation foam in them, which left no room for storage. I know I need to put foam in under the deck, but is it necessary to have it above the deck? Do I need to fill them with foam when I rebuild them or can I leave them hollow for storage space?

Re: Flotation Foam?

Seat bases are often filled with foam, especially in late model boats. This is because the higher placement of the foam meets the coast guard regulations regarding fotation foam and the floatation of the boat level and to prevent roll over common of boats that only have foam under the deck. My Bayliner has the foam in the seat bases, and also in a large cavity at the top of the transom.

So, flotation foam is up to you. But if you are going to use it, then you need to ask yourself this question: If your boat gets swamped, would you rather be sitting inside of an upright swamped boat, or hanging on the outside of an upside down swamped boat where the sharks are?
