Ok I am in the process of taking everything out of the boat. I got the engine off but how do I remove the steering wheel? I got the nut off but now what?

Its probably a tapered shaft and rusty it may take some effort.

Once the nut was tightened down, it was pressed on.

Put the nut back on until its just flush w the end of the threads. Gently tap the shaft/nut w a metal hammer while applying pressure to the wheel.

Graduallly tap a little harder and pull a little harder until the wheel comes loose.

Since I planned to replace both the steering wheel and all the helm steering components, I've beat on the shaft/nut quite hard w a 3lb maul. And pulled hard enough to crack the wheel, so they are often very difficult to remove.

Try using a penetrating spray on the shaft 1st too

Use PB Blaster and let it soak over night then follow the directions jbcurt mentioned above. It will give up eventually.

Some times there are three holes on the steering wheel to allow a steering wheel puller to be used. But I don't see anything on that steering wheel and the above procedures is about it. You could use a gear puller IF, and that is a huge IF, the steering wheel seems stout enough to allow you to pull against it. JMHO

So I started to gut it today. It really looks like the floor is attached to the hull. Need to figure out how to separate the floor from the hull

Marshcrusier, Yes it does look like they fiber-glassed right on top of the actual hull. SOOOO, you will have to cut everything out you can with whatever tools seems to work the best, and then grind the other fiberglass areas down. I don't see any other way to get it all out. Maybe others will chime in with better ideas. :noidea:

some use a circular saw to cut the floor close to the hull, some use a 'sawsall' reciprocating saw, i used a thin cutting disc on my 4" angle grinder. once u are left with seams, then use the 40ish grit flapy discs on the grinder and make tons of dust! first couple of pages of my build show pics of this process - 'friscoboater' posted utube vids of his demo/rebuild

So I am just curious, what would the issue be with leaving some of the FB that is attatched directly to the hull and creating a deck over top?

And GM280 I just recently came across your thread about your boat overhaul, that looks so similar to my project and is definitely an inspiration on my project. I hope to do half as good as yours is looking.

As long as there is no rotten plywood under the old glass deck I see no problem with what you suggest .

Ok Thanks sphelps! From what I can see so far it doesn't appear to be any rotten plywood under there. I will work on removing all the other easily removable parts of the interior, grinding it smooth, and look again after. I have a feeling this demo portion will take a little bit of time. Then come the process of putting together a plan for the deck how to attach to the boat.

I feel your pain. I have a 95% solution on grinding for my hull, but this last week's worth of rain has slowed me down so I have been working on other things that can be done for the boat in the garage until the weather clears up.

Marshcruiser, thanks for the kind words. Yes, your boat does resemble my tri-hull pretty closely. And you can do the exact same gutting and grinding that I had to do. Once you get all that told fiberglass removed to good solid fiberglass, the rebuild starts. But it really isn't as bad after that grinding as you may think. I will admit, that fiberglass grinding is extremely messy, dirty, smelly and itchy. But perserverance pays off. Keep posting and asking questions. You will certainly love the end results.

So you think I should grind away all the fiberglass from the hull? Do I just do that to the bottom?
