Re: First attempt at boat repair

Now can I screw all 4 layers together, drill and dowel pin them, , or do I clamp/weight it to het a strong bond. I dont have many clamps (3 or 4), so I might be using a copule 2x4s, and park my truck on it overnight

How wide are you making these 4 pc thick stringers, & how long 12-16ft +/-?

Re: First attempt at boat repair

they are +/- 3 foot long, and about 7 1/2 inches high on the 4 layer
double layer (might use half inch, havent decided for sure) are about 7 feet long, and same 7 1/2 high
this is what I am rebuilding

tried to scrub the bilge out, got some oil residue on the glass so I splashed some acetone, and started scrubbing, and I got a real quick reminder about the respirator.

Use TiteBond3 & you'll only need to leave them clamped for an hour or 2....

@4layer stringers, glue 2 layers together, and use modified WOG transom clamps & screws to hold them together. Do 1 set, & set it aside to dry. Do another set, set it aside. And do that twice more. You'll have 4 short sets of 2layer stringers.

@2layer stringers, glue 2 layers together, and use modified WOG transom clamps & screws to hold them together. Do 1 set, & set it aside to dry. Do another set, set it aside.

By now the 1st couple of sets of 4layer (that are each currently 2layers) should be cured. Once cured, glue 2 sets together to make a total of 2 4layer @3 1/2' stringer

If you have access to a decent table saw I'd make all the stringers slightly wider to allow you to trim them down to final size after you get them glued up into 2 or 4 layers.

Lookup a post by WoodOnGlass, the transom clamps are listed w/ his Deck, Stringer & Transom fabrication link...... Something similar but on a smaller scale can be used clamp your stringer pcs together.

The other choice is to get quite a few batteries, paint cans, lifting weights etc & use just enough screws to hold the parts together, stack them & weight them down all at once.

Your truck tire may sound like a good idea, but it is too much pressure, not well distributed. W/ TB3 you only need to securely clamp the parts together, too much pressure is as bad as not enough. The weigh of the truck may in fact warp the plywood as it cures, and squeeze some of the glue out of the joint....

Re: First attempt at boat repair

thanks a million JB, I have worked it out to get 2-3 sheets of ply this weekend. going to fab everything out, dry fit everything, then bed it all in. I was thinking aobut cutting a socket in the stringers for the motor mount, but that would probably just over complicate the whole works. the 4 cyl 140s dont need half the mount as troop had for his v8

Really disappointed with myself,, no progress on the boat this weekend. I did score a new sound system (facebook swap site $5) and get an exhaust fan put in, but nothing accomplished. Saturday started out sunny and 57, and fell to 22 yesterday. My heater couldn't get it above 50, glass is going to be real hard this winter

If you "Tent" the boat with a tarp and then use heat lamps to heat the surface you want to glass you can glass in cold weather. It's a lot easier to heat a small area than the whole garage. If you can keep the surface heat to 60? for 12 hours you're good to go. Heat lamps in a 8 cubic foot area should be able to do that.

Had the same problem here in TX. Wasn't as cold, but still to cold to gel coat and the wind was @ 35mph.
Just have to take it as it comes in winter time.
Don't let it get you down to much.:)

Re: First attempt at boat repair

its been a while since I posted, No progress going on the boat, the unheated garage situation is a real problem, temps in the low double digits, negative over night, looks like my launch date is fleeting. Hoping for warmer weather and a more forgiving schedule, I spent the entire time between thanksgiving and christmas on assignment in Minot ND, and headed back on the 2nd. Maybe an early thaw will put me back on schedule??

Happy holidays everyone, and I will see you again when the temps recover.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

Just an update, I havent posted here in months, My may launch date appears to be a distant memory, it is almost april and snow is falling. I have ordered a "starter pack" of materials, PL, titebondIII and 3 sheets of ply to building some stringers and bulkheads Easter weekend. I have decided to wait on the resin and glass till I get the stringers done in the back half. Correction, The wife has told me not to order glass or resins till I have everything ready to roll. Work schedule still limits everything I do, but I have scored 2 high flow blower fans out of old furnaces to use for ventilation, and a nice set of combo Skis from a facebook friend in Ohio, only $30, and he threw in 2 tubes. cant wait to start working again, the poor beast has sat neglected since October.

This winter was especially brutal, we saw temps -20 and lower, and for an entire week we had winds 30+, peaking around 55-60. Brutal cold, and even with my heaters running on HI I could only get it to 28-30.

Hey Railcar. I am from SD as well, this winter really has been an ugly one. I have been wanting to work on my boat also, this stupid weather sure has limited that. Anyway, just wanted to say hey to a fellow northerner and good luck on the rest of your project.

Re: First attempt at boat repair

I dont know if she will float this year or not, probably not, since the wife seems to think she needs remodeling done in the house. I have cemented my plans, 3/4" stringers, 4 layers thick for the motor area, get the stringers in place, set the deck in the rear portion, then pull the cap to do the front area under the bow seating. The floor will be bowed toward the centerline (not real far just enough for drainage) Paint the deck with a bedliner like product, and start piecing the trim back in. After I get it all dry fit, we will do upholstery, new seats, and see about repaint or gel in a year or 2. It will look good inside and rough out, but I need her to run again before I play with the outside hull.
