Hi so I need to know where cylinder 1-8 is on my distributor cap.if anyone has a illustration and it shows 1-8 in a picture I'd appreciate it. I'm thinking someone switched my spark plug wires around and this is why I'm having so much trouble with my motor at full throttle with it back firing out the carburetor.
I have a volvo penta 5.0fl motor it's a ford 302 v8 5.0L.angain I need to know where 1-8 is on the cap and if someone has a illustration that shows that please.im not very good at finding it the other ways I have a hard time understanding with my comprehensive skill so a picture would definitely help me out. I have the firing order on my motor already I just need the firing order on the cap please. Thank you dan

Follow number one from the sparkplug to the cap. Where it hooks up, that is number one. from there, follow the rest in order, 18436572 clockwise.

Ayuh,..... Number 1 can be anywhere on the cap, depending on how the distributor was dropped in, so long as it aligns with Tdc #1 compression stroke,....

Backfirin' through the carb is a symptom of a Lean condition,.....

the Ford 302 can have two different firing orders depending on which cam is in the motor. you will need the factory service manual for your serial number if you do not have the tag on the top of the manifold with the firing order.

As stated above, # 1 cylinder on the cap is the one that the rotor points to when the engine is at TDC on cylinder #1

If no one has removed the distributor the #1 will be at the 2 o’clock position and going in a counter clockwise rotation. 13726548

I removed the cap to replace it with a new one and new wires and spark plugs. But at idle the motor runs smoothly at half to full throttle it back fires out the carburetor and the boat only does about 20mph with no power. When I put it in neutral it idles smoothly but one in gear at 5 to 10 mph I can feel it shaking the boat and as I give more throttle it gets worse. So I need to know where cylinder 1 would be on the cap again I read what was posted and im having a hard time understanding it were if there was a picture that showed cylinder 1 I'd understand better.
Here my model and serial numbers model number is first 5.0fL pncs
Serial number is 4110137196.
I hope this will help since it was stated there are 2 different firing orders because of the cam.but again a picture of 1-8 on the cap will really help me understand. Thank you dan

I put a new fuel filter on and no difference so do u think my carburetor is dirty.
And thank u for the diagram of the firing order but I need a diagram of the firing order on the distributor cap as well

What do u mean I'm asking because I have a hard time understanding how to find cylinder 1 on the cap unless it's marked. I'm sorry if I'm being a inconvenience to you I'm just asking for help because I got mechanics telling me I need a new motor and I know they just want to take my money from me.but when it comes to timing on a motor that was the 1 thing I wasn't good at in school. So this is why I was asking for a firing order on the cap but if there isn't one then I understand.

stop looking for the easy answer as it doesnt exist

depending where the distributor was installed, the direction of the rotor and its starting location with respect to cylinder #1 will need to be determined by you as none of us are there

pull spark plugs, spin motor over with your finger in #1 cylinder hole. you will get a Pfft when you are TDC on exhaust stroke and you will get a PPPPFFFFFFFTTTTTTTT when you are on TDC of the compression stroke. now grab the belts and back the motor up until the pointer on the timing cover and the timing mark on the damper align.

the motor is now at TDC on cylinder #1

now look at the rotor in the dizzy. it is pointing to cylinder #1 in the cap. This is the starting point on the cap.

there are two potential firing orders on your motor depending on how the motor was built. as stated prior, there should be a tag or decal for the firing order specific to your motor. if you do not know which firing order, you will need to pull the valve covers and determine firing order by looking at the rocker arm movement as you rotate the motor over.

then starting at the post determined to pair up with cylinder #1, follow the firing order in a CCW fashion

However if you replaced the wires where you took them off the old cap, the issue is most likely not the firing order.

Your symptoms describe a motor starving for fuel. which usually means either bad fuel, or a fuel system needing cleaning in this case, the carb / anti siphon valve / etc.

I would not think your engine would run at all if the distributor cap was off as much as you believe. I believe your problem may be a slight timing problem but probably more like a bad gas or carb issue.

So my timing and spark plug wires are all correct. I pulled my carb off it's made by Holly and I noticed there where 5 philp head screws on the bottom of the carburetor well when I went to lossen those it felt if they were finger tight with the screw driver which now im wondering if I was sucking air in between the gasket on the bottom of my carburetor and causing the back fire from the carb.the carburetor didn't look dirty but it's still gunna get fully cleaned and rebuild. I found these numbers on the carburetor and was told that they are my list number.i just want to know if they will tell me what kind of carburetor rebuild kit I will need and if so how do I figure out what carburetor rebuild kit I need?.any help withis post I'll will be greatly appreciated. I want to get my boat fixed and in its slip .

When re-assembling, put a dab of blue locktite on the screws. It’ll help keep them in place in the future.

So can anyone tell me where my anti siphon valve is on a 1996 volvo penta 5.0fl. It's a 1996 wellcraft excel 21sl boat. I was told to check into that as well as to why my boat has no power after 2000rpm and won't plane out. It back fires out the carburetor. It's not the timing or a crossed spark plug wires. The fuel pump is fine I pulled my carburetor apart and it's clean now I was told to check my anti siphon valve again 1996 wellcraft excel 21sl boat. Thank u dan

Ayuh,..... Where the fuel is sucked outa the tank, you'll find an elbow, 'n a hose barb to the fuel line,.....

That hose barb, Is the anti-siphon valve,....
The dip-tube should unscrewed with the elbow, 'n sometimes there's a little sock filter on it's bottom end,....
