JasonJ is just doin' what most intelligent rational cornsumers do all the time, (cutting back cornsumption in a healthy way that he gains a benifit from). Rolmops is doin' what most Libs n' modern Democrats do all the time, (explainin' natural supply demand fluctuations in price of a valuable commodity in terms that only people that never think in any critical fashon do). All Dems n' Libs, (the religion of LARGE SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT) are GOOD; n' all Cornservatives n' Republicans are BAD. Anything that happens that you like is the Democrats hard work; n' anything that happens that you don't like is Republicans n' Cornservatives n' George Bush's fault!! JR

That's right rolmops, and if the Clintons were still in office, the Arabs and Hugo Chaves would just love us to death and the price of oil would be back down to $35 bbl, right?

No way.
If you carefully read my comment you will see that I did not mention any political preference. It is my belief that big oil has its web spread out all over the political spectrum.
As for supply and demand being the real force for the oil prices to go either north or south...That would only be in a ideal economy with ideal competition.
The moment the customer has no choice and he must buy the product because it is impossible to do without, all the rules of supply and demand are thrown out of the window.
The customer is now at the mercy of the supplier and the only things protecting the customer from the supplier are either the potential of economic collapse, which would hurt the supplier, or government intervention through price control.
This is not a liberal train of thought. You can find this in any first year course of economics 101
Another reason why supply and demand do not work,is the artificial supply side limitation of the resource. The oil producers can produce more, but they choose not to.This renders the supply/demand idea worthless.

Rolmops,

Hate to tell you this but the price of oil is a worldwide phenomenon. The supplier buys it, refines it and sells it to us with a percentage profit.

Say what? Sounds like a pretty supply/demand scenario to me. You don't think that if every person was able to cut his consumption of fuel by 25% that the price wouldn't come down because the demand was reduced?

Can you cut your consumption by 25% or even 10%?

rolmops makes a good piont when you look around your home and just about every thing you own is a oil based produced.Even if we all found a way to cut our dependance on the oil companys the price would go up becouse there prorfit margine would be to low.
I think the main reason the goverments dont try to lower the fuel prices is becouse thay make to much easy money in the form of tax on it.That way the goverment can easily pay for all the social programs that we have to have.We are also paying for a war and those events are not cheep. So to think the goverment is going to try to lower the price of fuel. You would have to be in a dream world.
The funny thing is no one wants to slow down "and save fuel" but go faster with more power. There is a whole industry built on it and we love it.So i gess in the end it does not mater what the price is were going to pay for it.

Dude, you went from one extreme to the other.

Get one of these. A Yamaha Majesty. Mine is an 06 model, brand new, 4 grand, 100mph and 60mpg, and you can carry lots of stuff under the seat.

A photo of mine (or one identical to it) is my avatar.

Besides all that you have already stated. Which most is true. All the illegal Alliens who have paid nothing into, but able to get free Medical and Social Security benefits. We are supporting. I'm afraid fellows, our Govt is selling us short and our Country is on a downward slide. Going down the tube. Politician don't care about you or I or even our country. They only care about what goes in their pocket and their own personal agendas. It's been stated many, many times if we really want Social Security fixed and many of our problems corrected. Take the Gravy Train away from the Politicians and put them all on Social Security and all the same benefits you and I are on. Take away their expense accounts or at least make them accountable for what they spend. Cut their frugal spending. Then they will fix the problems in a hurry. As long as the average peson is footing the Bills and the politicians are riding along free. They won't fix a D*@#**m thing.
The Oil companies have such a strong lobby what few honest, uncorrupted politicians we MIGHT have. Get swept along the way side, bought off, eliminated or quieted. Send the illegals back and let them come into our country the correct way and earn there rights like all other Good Honest American citizens who have earned the right to what few benifits we have. Illegals are a slap in the face to those who have came into our country, gone through the process to earn the right to be called "AMERICAN CITIZENS"

With all that's been said we still live in the BEST COUNTRY in the world. We don't have Americans fleeing our country by the thousands seeking a better way of life.

I have to have a big truck because I have a 35 ft Fifth Wheel and a Boat that cannot be pulled by a car. Am, I willing to give up those things? NO! So I pay the price at the pumps and cringe while pumping. The only way I can win is when I put the Trailer away for the winter and the boat into storrage I drop the collision on the truck and trailer and drive my car all winter that gets 34 MPG . The Insurance cost and gas I save in not driving the truck all winter more than pays for having the boat winterized and the winter storage fee for the boat.

So... all summer I continue to make the Oil Companies richer and richer and the Politicians fatter and fatter. In the winter I put them both on a diet.

Lowering your use does nothing when you have a monopoly more or less

The best true example of this is with the lower use of natural gas in this global warming winter ;) :D

My gas company went for a RATE increase so they could make the same profit the lowered gas use hurt there profits

The mystery was lifted because the PSC had to approve the rate hit

It is time for the government to do some 'Trust busting'......;)
The US now has the equivalent of four or five Standard Oils......
There is no real competition when they get to control the supply to suit their profiteering........
It will take an act of congress to fix it just like back in Teddy Roosevelt's day......
Now there's a man this country could sorely use right about now......:D

I'll second that. When the U.S. invaded IRAQ Bush new we would lose the oil they were producing and we were buying. And now with the sanctions on IRAN. He "Bush" Has scut that supply of Oil off that we was getting from them. Oh we're still getting the oil from a third country but we are (the Consumers) the ones paying through the nose. By the time the Oil companies inflate the price of OIL and Gas we really are getting screwed.

We had a warmer winter than ever in History but heating prices still soared,
skyrocketed because the Oil Companuies had to keep their profit margin the same to keep all their stockholders happy.

42 BILLION Profit for one quarter.

Maybe you should step back from your emotions and look at some facts for a little bit. The profits based on sales revenue for oil companies have changed little over the years. Check out this chart:
averageindustryearnings.gif

They are pretty much middle of the road as far as american businesses are concerned.

What people should really be concerned about is gasoline tax. The gasoline tax windfall for the government has gone up way more than oil company profits.

When you go to Starbucks and plop down $4 for a cup of coffee, why are'nt you complaining that Congress should be doing something about the excess profits? Isn't Starbucks monopolizing the coffee business?

How about your copy of Windows Vista that you just paid $150 for? You going to go to Congress and stop that too?

Where does it end?

Your comparison is **** poor to say the least.....
A daily cup of coffee is not a neccessity......
Microsoft has & is still involved in anti-trust litigation here & abroad.....
Gas is not a commodity, it is a neccessity.....
If you think it doesn't affect the cost of everything that must be shipped, think again.....;)
Do you think John D. Rockefeller went down without a fight......
When supply is artificially curtailed to produce a sellers market, the government needs to step in....

Show me where you get your facts that oil companies inflate oil prices?

Last time I looked, oil prices are set by the global market.

I have a question for a few of the last posters. Do you think it is only US oil companies that are the ones making profits or all world oil companies making similar profits?

Good idea, except it would take a considerable amount of time to offset the purchase price, registration, insurance, and maintenance in savings. This is why I have not went out and bought a beater Geo Metro. If I had a longer, more consumptive commute then it would be a good idea. Besides, I really need to be more healthy.

Sorry to tell you...gasoline is a commodity...take a look at the commodity market. You can buy futures on gasoline which, by the way, is another reason gasoline prices rise at times...speculation.

Food is also a necessity...it is also a commodity.

Please show proof that supply is being curtailed.

And yes...we had windfall profit taxes through the 80's. It was repealed in 1988. You know what it did? It killed the oil companies being able to reinvest so that domestic oil production died in this country. We are paying for this now.

Oh, it's a global trust all right, just like the diamond biz.....
'Cept I can't or need to use a rock to haul my material to the job site....
No one says they can't make a profit, but when you create an artificial shortage to keep prices up, intervention is neccessary......
I don't care what other oil companies do .....
I care what they do in the US, though.....
You cannot tell me something is not rotten about the fact that the price of gas at the pump has risen a dollar a gallon in the past 3-4 months.....
There is clearly a market manipulation.......;)
