Re: Fender line length

2 times you will be glab you have big fenders. First when a storm cames and beats the boat on the dock and second when you raft up with other boats in an area where you get waked. Alot of damage can happen fast.

So...how come when they are mounted on docks they are called bumpers and when they hang over the side of a boat they are called fenders?

They are? I still call them fenders. I am not sure what I call permanent "padding" that is full length on a dock. Sorry for the hijack.

Because EVERYTHING changes names when it's on a boat.

Have you ever heard kids doing the Hokey Pokey saying "you put your port leg in....."? I didn't think so.

Poop deck does NOT mean what you think it does either. :D

Re: Fender line length

on my 19 ft runabout that is used mainly to raft up with buds. I have 8" fenders with about 6ft of rope cuz I use the same line to tie up with. I also use bungee cords for the widest beam spot in the center. a little extra line is better than too short.
On my 26 ft boat I used 5/8" line about 6 ft for the same reasons.View attachment 180334

Even the "DockMate" Catalog isn't consistent;
Nearly identical item are called Fenders, Bumpers, and Cushions. Go figure! :confused:

If I didn't know better; The Rub-Rail functions more like a Car Bumper than anything else! :D

Re: Fender line length

I have searched and seen the same over the years. I don't care. I am gong to be a boating terms snob. It's the only way that some of this stuff will survive. They are Fenders. I hang them on either the port or starboard stern quarter, and also amidships. Damn, I started this flippin' carp . . . :facepalm:

Re: Fender line length

For reference, these aren't long enough. Or even necessary. God I hate stuff like this :facepalm:

Actually those are the perfect length. If they were any longer they wouldn't flail in the wind properly while underway... :lol:
