Re: Fender line length

Actually those are the perfect length. If they were any longer they wouldn't flail in the wind properly while underway...

cruising with fenders hanging over is the same self-embarassment as driving a car with the blinker stuck on, or gas hatch open, or walking around with your fly open.

However, it becomes a great source for those of us who own fenders, but have never bought one new. So I encourage new "boaters" I see in bowriders to do just that.

Re: Fender line length

I need someone to tell me how to use fenders properly. I tie them to the cleats on my boat at a proper height to protect my boat from the dock. With my boat, the fenders closer to the bow have more rope than those at the stern.
Is this the proper way?

Whatever way to get them at the right height is OK. Most importantly you need one at the widest point or she will rub there. I rarely use one near the bow as most boats narrow down there. It's one at the stern, and one amidships. Tie so she can't pivot in any way that those two aren't in play.

I use one of the Seachoice clips at the stern and use a fender tender clip over my windshield amidships.

I have those metal fittings on my boat and I am using them. Do you leave to detachable metal part on the rope and just clip it in when you need to use the fender?

Something else we have in common, Bruce. I have used the Fender Tender II for years, with great results. They can become brittle and break after about 8 years in the sun, though! ;)

That just means another free fender for us scrounges ;)

Edit: BTW, I grab even the ugly ones and use them to mark obstacles. Then, I must admit, they become a buoy   :D

Yes. Very rarely do I need to adjust it. I have it set for my dock at my house which is pretty close to most docks I go to.

You and your terminology! When will it end? :) (Quick, what do you call the panel on the side of a coupe or sedan, just behind the door(s)?) ;)

It depends on what you are tying up against, and what type of motion you expect, and changes (tide height/current direction).

Tying along a straight floating dock is nothing. Try to keep a fender between your boat and a verticle piling, with wakes and along-side current.

Tying boat to boat isn't always easy due to varying shape as well as heights moving as people move around in the boats.

The tighter the tie between the two objects on eithr side of the fender, the better. Doesn't always work that way.

Really, it just takes practice and a critical eye to your circumstances.
