What and where are some of your all-time favorite lakes, and why? I am looking to travel this new year and want suggestions for camping and watersports with family on a tight budget.

Re: Favorite Lakes

OK Rides... I'll try again... this time with the right info.:)
Although we've been there only once, we plan on returning to Kentucky Lake. The lake is much over a mile wide in many places, with many rivers feeding into it, that are more than wide enough to ski, tube, whatever. If you like boating along river banks, you can go for a LOOOONG way (something like 90 miles long). There is even a loop that people make through channels and lakes in the area, going through locks and such.
We stayed at a very small place called Oak Haven Resort, that I would very highly recommend, here's their website:
http://www.oakhavenresort.net/
The lake tends to be shallow in places, but if you get a chart (you can get one for about $6 from Art and Connie) and have a depth finder, you'll be fine.
Their cabins are actually two bedroom houses, with cable TV and air conditioning. They are not "newly decorated" in modern style, but they are very clean, comfortable, and fully equipped. We are also on a "family budget" *** you mention, so care much more about cleanliness and comfort than about "newly decorated" decor.
The cabins are about 100 yards from the docks (included in the nightly rates); they also have a pool. The photo is what you see when you look out the porch - not too bad eh?
It was a great few days, and we would have gone back in 2008 except for family situations that prevented us - hopefully will go this year.
Sorry if I'm rambling, but we really enjoyed ourselves.
I'm sure there are many other choices, but this is certainly one to consider.

Jorge

My wife and I really enjoy going to Charleston Lake in southern Ontario Canada. We stay at the southern end of the lake at Whispering Pines . Nice cottages and very affordable. Ken & Barb have a gas dock right there too.

It's just 20 minutes from the 1000 Island bridge and plenty to do in the area if the fish aren't biting. Gananocque and Brockville are very close and back in NY at Clayton is a very nice boat museum.

Re: Favorite Lakes

In no particular order because they each have their own flavor....

- As H8tank mentioned, Lakes Powell and Mead- especially if you're from the east. Desert lakes are cool.
- If you like the party scene, Lake Havasu.
- Lakes George and Champlain. Exquisite beauty and crystal clear waters.
- NY Finger lakes. My personal favorite is Keuka. Definately not a "tourist-trap" like so many others.

The nearest lake from me is Deep Creek Lake - almost 4 hours away.
I've only canoed on it.

One of my favorite lakes is Melton Hill reservoir near Knoxville, TN. There is very little traffic (compared to other nearby lakes) and very little development along the shorelines due to all of the DOE owned land. The water is also extremely calm. In fact, colleges throughout the country hold rowing competitions on this lake.

Yeah I'd say Keuka lake is great one, and the wine trails all around the Finger Lakes are cool. My #1 is Rushford Lake N.Y small but good, with tons of state land all around . Going for a week starting jan. 14th.....Brrrrrrrrr!

I'm from Southern CA and I love the Colorado River Lakes, Havasu, Mead are my favorites. Want to check out Bass Lake near Yosemite, I hear it's real nice out their but the lake is a little small. Also hear Silverwood Lake near Hesperia is small but also nice!!

Re: Favorite Lakes

My faves are the ones 15 minutes from my house... Harris Chain of Lakes in Lake County Florida, Harris, Eustis, Dora, Griffin. Just ensure you have a depth finder since these are lowland lakes with an average shore depth around 4 feet. Middle of the lakes you'll be in 10 - 15 feet of water. TS Fay brought the levels back up so most ramps are open again.

Re: Favorite Lakes

My advice to all you good people is to stay far far away from Keuka lake.It is positively the most awful polluted and busy pond in all of NY,you can only see about 50 foot down.It is Y shaped and people try to boat in an X shaped pattern.Besides it is full of those big stinky lake trout.Ask yourself, why would you want to share the water with 15 to 20 pound lake trout or even worse, brown trout the length of your arm and the girth of your girl friend's thigh.
I have made it my personal crusade to help people stay away from this lake.I even bought a cottage there so I can be right there to warn you against going to this awful place.

Re: Favorite Lakes

Every year we take our vacation at Lake of the Ozarks. Lots to do for the family. We love Frankie & Louie's and Captain Ron's. Both these bar restaurants have beaches for the kids to swim while we have dinner and listen to the bands. Lots of places to rent, use vrbo.com. Not to sure about campgrounds, but the lake is huge. If a place is open and you book last minute great deals.

But if you have a small boat, plan on staying in a cove, on weekends. The lake gets choppy Sat and Sun.

I think you've been "Fingered"!:p
The Admiral and I fell in love with Seneca Lake last Fall, so we'll be sure to "stay away" from Keuka when we're in the area next time.
