.....At the top you will see the round housing the driveshaft comes out of. That housing fits in the gimbal.
It's that housing where the spanner nut or bearing retainer ring goes. The one that requires that special big tool to unscrew, right? Got ya, Searay205. I may have to sacrifice a good u-joint bellow and douse the inside with PB blaster, even though PB blaster hasn't done a damn thing for me so far. --- Stay tuned!

you need a porta power, once engine out you should be able to span something with a 4x4 and use a bottle jack or scissor jack to get off. push on the remaining drive shaft

Hurricane Laura is gone and I was out of town for 3 days, now back to the fun. Over the weekend my brother and I finished the A frame and attached a chain hoist to it (Harbor Freight #69338) (pics 1,2,3) and the engine finally was removed without any further problems. I want to go back briefly to the rear motor mounts, the real problem as far as the motor was concerned. I came up with the idea to drill a hole in the big washer and the spacer underneath in an angle towards the bolt (pic 4) and then squirted PB blaster into the holes and figured that the solvent would work its way down the bolt and free up the frozen motor mount. Well, I still think it was a good idea and normally it probably would have worked, but PB blaster failed to do what I thought it would, free up the shaft, even though I put solvent in it twice a day for more than a week. After 2 weeks I figured either the bolt head will snap like it did with the other bolt or PB blaster did its job and the bolt will come out. To my surprise neither happened, but the bolt started to turn without snapping the head, but did not seem to come lose or out. That worried and confused me and I thought that I had stripped the nut on the bottom or worse yet stripped or cracked the transom frame which holds the nut. So I decided to take my 4 1/2" angle grinder and grind the head off. After I did that it became clear what had happened. The rubber mount actually had separated from its metal parts and the transom frame or nut are just fine. If PB blaster did anything it may have weakened or softened the rubber of the mount and it just ripped loose instead of snapping the head. Thank God for that. Now I had to deal with the other bolt, which had no head but all its rubber. Again I got a special tool from Harbor Freight (pic 5) and it took less than a minute to turn that rubber into dust. Great tool for that purpose (Harbor Freight #38425). Now I can concentrate on the OD in the next couple of days and get that one out too....hopefully. ---- Stay tuned!

Now Hurricane Sally is pounding us, good grief. Anyway, in the last few days I was able to remove one of the rear motor mount bolts. It unscrewed in a normal fashion. The other bolt is stuck solidly in the transom frame. I am soaking it in PB blaster and hopefully I will be able to unscrew it as well. Otherwise I have to drill it out. Both bolts were solidly frozen to both sides, the motor mounts and the transom frame. I guess, a worst case scenario. Now the good news is that I finally got the OD out. So where was it stuck so bad that nothing seemed to pull it out. I took a good look at it and came to the conclusion based on the markings on the drive shaft that the drive was stuck in the gimbal bearing. The gimbal bearing itself is frozen solid as well. I can't turn it by hand at all. What surprised me is that the gimbal bearing didn't budge but put up such an incredible resistance that even my ratchet-to-the-tree trick did not pull that sucker out. But it did this time because I dared to increase the pull on the OD a little more and hitting the drive shaft stub inside the boat with a hammer in various directions until it finally popped. And to my amazement I found about a good cup of beach sand and other crud inside the UJ boot, even though the boot seems to be not broken or defective. How did that sand get in there? That only confirms my suspicion even more that the boat may have been partially submerged at one time or at least was beached. Kenny, you may be right. It's probably a Katrina boat. But one thing is for sure, I have never seen anything in such disrepair and neglect. But then, there in lies the challenge to restore it again.
This probably will bring this thread to a close because my objectives have been reached. The motor is out, the drive is out and the one rear mount stud will be out too in the next couple of days. With the help of you all I learned a lot and was able to finally get my problems solved. Thanks to you all. We will meet up again. I am just starting on this boat and I am not too familiar with MerCruiser/Alpha One and need a lot of help and good advice.

Yes Searay, that poor boat has been through hell. But now engine is on engine stand and drive is on drive stand (how do you like my drive stand/) ready to be wheeled in to the operating room for some major repair and maintenance.

To quote Searay205 "This is better than a reality show" so this project will continue under a new thread. Both the engine and out drive have been removed from the boat which was the purpose of this thread and mission has been accomplished. The next chapter will be "Overhauling my 1988 MerCruiser 4.3 ltr. engine". See you there.
