Does anyone eat what're considered "trash" fish?

Examples would be Carp, freshwater Drum, Gar, Bowfin, Buffalo and anything else you can think of that fits that catagory.

I tried to eat a Drum once and that thing was pretty disgusting, but I know I probably didn't cook it right.

Who eats Black Bass? I don't like the taste of those things either, and I consider the meat tough.

I have eaten carp and drum, but only baked. Not great, but, well, there are times that you might eat anything not poisonous.

Black bass are not my favorite, but palatable. I don't like trout at all.

One of my favorite "trash" fish was shad, baked. Tastes like sardines. Haven't had that in a long, long time.

Now, crappies and walleyes are a real treat among fresh water fish.

I'm not a fan of freshwater fish in general (too fishy) but....I had gar balls a number of times back when I lived in Baton Rouge. Pretty Good. Smoked Carp (shoulders) is pretty good when done right.

All fish are trash to me. I wish I could eat 'em....but can't. I cooked a bunch of Snapper on the grill last night for some friends. They loved it. I had a burger.

We have caught stingrays, cut them in little chunks, and cooked them like you would scallops. Everybody seems to really enjoy them.

Over the years I have tried a number of "trash" fish. I found that soaking them in brine and smoking them was about the only way That worked for me.

Tried carp once and did not like it at all. Talked to a fellow fisherman the other day and his comment was, " most people know about the one mud vein but they miss the second one and that is what ruins the taste". If you want to try again you might Google that.

I will stick with Cod or Sole from the freezer section.

I've eaten stingray. Soaked in buttermilk for hours, or I will not touch it. I'll east large and small mouth bad. I have friends that will not easy sturgeon because it's a bottom feeder. I absolutely love sturgeon. Even carp can be really good if cooked right.

yep. asian carp is my favorite by far. beats most freshwater fish IMO. NOT the commons the invasive asians. the meat it flakey and white and very mild with almost no fishiness. like big versions on a bluegill. only drawback is bones.

i eat freshwater drum once in a while. i scale gut and wash. head on. bake in foil with butter and garlic. very little prep and the meat flakes right out.

carp. once in a blue moon ill eat a few. buffolo i aint had for years. always enjoied it. a friends dad used to score and fry it. he make it real tasty. its all decent if the person preparing it has experience. removing red meat on the latteral line has a tremendous positive effect on the taste.

Re: Eating "trash" fish

The secret to making most "trash" fish tasty is in the preparation and cooking. Things like carp, shad, etc. need to be marinated, then baked long and not too hot, like 4 hours at 180*. This turns the bones soft and chewable. LOML used various herbs, garlic and butter wrapped in foil. She grew up in wartime and postwar Europe where carp are a delicacy and anything not poisonous was welcomed.

I reiterate what I said on another thread the other day."There is no such thing as a trash fish".They all have their place on the right day.

There are lots of fish that people eat and enjoy, that others scoff at. I've heard people say stiper is nasty tasting, to which I agree if they don't clean the fish properly and leave the mud line on the fillets. Many like trout and I hate it, unless it's a native and fresh caught. A hatchery raised trout tastes gnarly to me. There is one fish though, that really grosses me out and lots of people seem to like eating it...

Tilapia, AKA: Poop Fish

I have converted many people from tilapia lovers to tilapia haters after I tell them fish farms use tilapia to "clean" the water. China also imports tilapia to the US and guess what they feed the tilapia,,, do do, ca ca, poop...

(I know crab and lobster and eat bottom stuff too, but they are so tasty I don't care :D)

Tilapia is OK if you don't know how they are raised. I've never wanted to eat one since I saw the episode of Dirty Jobs when he was at the fish farm and saw that about the Tilapia. I've told other people about that and most don't seem to care. It's amazing that some people will eat whatever a grocery store sells, even if they know it's raised like that, but yet they won't eat anything that once lived in the woods.

I think I tried Tilapia once and that was before I knew about how they are raised. Didn't like it then and I won't touch it now. I'v heard Vietnamese imported tilapia is the worst for hatchery cleanliness , and that's what is in most grocery store freezers.

Me too, by accident though. I ordered Fish and Chips (the menu said it was made from "cod") and when I took the first bite I knew immediately it wasn't cod. I un-breaded the fish and discovered a poop-fish fillet

Meh... crabs, shrimp, and lobster eat the same thing.

Then there's the chicken, it will take a dump and then turn right around and peck in it and then go and pick out the undigested corn from cow and pig dung.

... and don't get me started on what hogs and pigs will eat.

If I had to eat a carp or tilapia give me a plate of tilapias. I know in Africa they are hippo poop eaters but when caught in local waters I have not seen any hippos around aleast not lately.;)

Carp caught in cold water in the spring is the best and better if the water is clear. Then as stated brined and smoked. Put a little maple syrup over it before smoking and its tastes like salmon. Buffalo is a similiar fish to carp but tastes better. River drum can't be eaten, when cooked its like a rubber inner tube but the lake drum is pretty good if cooked right.
