Re: Eating "trash" fish

If I had to eat a carp or tilapia give me a plate of tilapias.

Here's an old family carp recipe, passed down from when they had to eat what ever they had available. No being picky if you didn't want to starve! (It would probably work with tilapia too.)

- Fillet a nice 15-20# carp being careful to remove all dark colored (oily) meat and bones.
- Prepare a brine of 1 cup salt, 1 cup brown sugar, 2tsbp dill, 1/2 cup horseradish, 1 gallon cold water.
- Brine carp fillets in milk bucket overnight.
- Soak 1x12x24" cedar board in water overnight while carp is brining (board to cook fish on)
- Coarsely chop 2 onions, 12 carrots, entire celery bunch, 5# potatoes
- Brush carp fillets with oleo and season to taste with salt, pepper, dill (and a light sprinkle of brown sugar if available)
- Place fillet on cedar board and layer with vegetables, onions first, then celery, potatoes and carrots
- Bake at 350* until fillet flakes easily with a fork and vegetables are tender, about 90 minutes
- Carefully remove vegetables as to not disturb fillet and place them into a serving dish
- Grab large putty knife from garage and scrape carp fillet into garbage can
- Eat cedar board and vegetables

That sounds great FD!

Where I grew up, Carp sandwich was great at Joe Tess Fish House. I haven't seen oleo in a recipe for many years!

Cedar boards are hard on the teeth. You need to clean up after the dog. Not trying a good Carp Sandwich is not living life....:D Seriously, It's good!

The King Carp $11.25
24oz whole carp hand breaded

24oz of carp, woof, that's a big hunk-o-fish! (Need to unhitch the belt a notch eating that thing :D)

Don't worry, I've eaten my fair share of so-called trash fish, smoked carp, canned redhorse, (frog legs, turtle). It was pretty darn good as I remember, but that was a loooong time ago too...

Meh... crabs, shrimp, and lobster eat the same thing.

Then there's the chicken, it will take a dump and then turn right around and peck in it and then go and pick out the undigested corn from cow and pig dung.

... and don't get me started on what hogs and pigs will eat.

Yeah, but they eat other things also. They aren't raised in a place where their primary duty is to eat poop (and that's all they eat) and then go to the market.

If I had to eat a carp or tilapia give me a plate of tilapias. I know in Africa they are hippo poop eaters but when caught in local waters I have not seen any hippos around aleast not lately.;)

Right, no hippos at the fish farms, but the Tilapia are in tanks where they feed on the poop of the real money fish for the farm (forgot what the species was) to clean the water so the water can be reused.

I really want to try catching and skinning frogs. I know a pond that is supposed to be easy caching. I was told you can catch then on smaller senkos and skin them with pliers like catfish.

Ya you got to skin them if you just do the legs cut off and you can start skinning with fingers. Need pliers when you get to the knee joints if you fry fresh they will bounce around in the pan alittle heard if you frezy first will not do that but never tried it.
There is a guy shows how to skin the whole frog and looks like you save and get a lot more meat if I find link will send to you.
Turtles a little tough but good in a stew real pain to get out of the shell.

I haven't been there in 30 years FD, although I thought it was good when I was younger, I'm a bit pickier now. I would rather be eating Rattlesnake at Rustler's Roost in Phoenix. (if they are still open) :)

I prefer not to eat "trash fish" but if you prepare them right they are OK to eat.

Smoked carp is rather good.

Bullhead is good if it deep fried.

Sheaphead is kind of mucky tasting.

Eelpout is good smoked.

Crappie minnows taste like dirt...only tasted them while ice fishing and drinking beer.

An old trapper friend of mine once told my wife that the difference between what you will eat and won't eat is about 24 hrs.

Here's one for all the tilapia/poopfish haters.
This is a dirty little secret about beef. It is quite common for cattle breeders to buy chicken manure. This is because grain eating chickens pass about 60% of the grain through their system without ever utilizing it. Cattle breeders feed it to the cows and the cows love it.
Now guess who loves eating cows...

You're from the city, right?

Have you ever seen chicken poop before? Do you know what that green spot in chicken poop is?
