Wind mills have environmental issues with wildlife, noise and disturbing natural air currents. .

Never herd of any down side to wind mills on till your comment.I guess its all possible. How does it change the natural air currents.

How can you transfer one source of energy to another and still keep the original source? Energy can be transferred but not multiplied. The shear numbers of windmills and the land area needed to equal the nuclear plants in this country would be mind boggling. Solar has issues with pollution since the manufacturing of photoelectric cells is a major issue in China.

If anyone has a better alternative for creating electrical energy lets hear about it. Even with it's ugly side which is evident in Japan there is not another method that is yet known to man that has less impact on the environment. Fossil fuels contribute to the greenhouse gases. Wind mills have environmental issues with wildlife, noise and disturbing natural air currents. Hydroelectric power is being attacked by those that want to restore our rivers. With all things there are risks...does that mean we get rid of automobiles? Every time we get in our cars to drive somewhere we are at a much greater risk of dying than even those people living in close proximity to the Fukushima plant.

Natural gas. Look up how much is available ;) Oh and I like windmills!!

Oh I agree but even NG emits some emissions, plus the fact that miles and miles of distribution piping pose major disaster threats as well. The electric utilities love windmills too....they are a good tax write off and good PR.

Here's a partial list.
1. Windmills kill lots of birds.
2. Noise, aparently to the point of causing illness.
3. Maintenance, along with original cost makes them unable to compete in a free market.
4. Tax burden, see the last one, our money is the "solution"
5. Wind is intermittent. It doesn't blow on demand.
6. Unsightly, especially in large quantities. "Not here" is a big problem.

hope it helps

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

I do love Iboats..and have some kind of connection with you for sure..

So Im posting this ( not out of fear ) to ask if anyone out there has the same worries about the events happening in Japan fukashima nuclear power plants that I do..

Yes I could provide "sources" and "links" .. but im too tired of looking them up Again....

Sounds very scary if you ask me.. ( And I have researched ALOT ).

Just wondering..

YD.

My apologies for going off on a hijack

Ladies ......... Gentlemen ......... and other's.......... with respect to the Original Poster Yacht Dr. (the original post is quoted) We need to get back on subject;)

YD-
I think you have to look at it in these terms, of the fissionable materials being released some last a nano second, some last a day to a week to a month and some have a half life of 50.000 years.
You just gotta cross your fingers "most" every thing decays really, really fast.

The decay rate of the material is a specific "half life" number. The only other part of that equation is the amount of material and amount of dispersion (how small the particles are and how far apart). The standard half life of some radio-active material will surpass our lifetime!

The flip side of that is that those materials with long half lifes also have a low emmission rate. Radiation occurs when decay occurs.

^^^^ As far as specific radionuclides, the mixture will change somewhat. Has anyone noticed that they're not talking about Iodine 131 anymore? That's because the reactors aren't critical (operating) anymore so they aren't producing Iodine. I-131 has a half-life of around 8 days so is decaying. After 8 days, half of what was available at the beginning of the accident has gone away and it continues to decay into less harmful substances. In many cases, it's not a concern after 7 half-lives.

That doesn't mean that the other radioactive materials or radionuclindes are gone, just that one of them (Iodine-131) is beginning to be a non-issue. For those that scrambled to purchase the potassium iodine tablets, they're no longer needed.

Let's put this in perspective, coal burning power plants are responsible for 10s of thousands of deaths a year in the US and also emit radioactive particles. Second hand smoke causes half a million deaths.

Don't worry about Fukushima.
