Hey MT and now the reactor to Trojan lies at Hanford.

One good thing is each plant they build is better and safer than the last. Usually incorporating changes needed to avoid problems with previous plants. Like from the Japanese nuke mess we learned not to build nuke plants to withstand earthquakes that register 8 in an area that has level 9 earthquakes.... :D

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

I am not a praying person, but I am reminded of a wise prayer that asks something like this of the Lord:

Strength to change what I can change, ability to accept what I can't change and wisdom to tell the difference.

Freaking out and blaming are very self destructive activities; There is energy falling on the earth and in the earth in quantities far, far greater than we can ever "use" as electricity. Every technology we have used or know how to use to convert it to electricity demands a price. That is something we can not change.

So, relax and have a beer. :)

But, but, JB! Somebody has to be blamed! Somebody has to be at fault!

The fact is, the operators of the Fukushima plant were warned about the tsunami possibility even before it was built and chose to ignore it. They judged that data prior to roughly 1896 was probably unreliable so they chose to assume that the maximum tsunami would be about 18 feet even though geological evidence indicated much higher as recently as 869 AD, possibly bigger ones earlier. The plant survived the earthquake without much incident, it was the 27 foot tsunami that caused all the trouble. Bottom line, had they built a 28 foot barrier the reactors would stil be pooping along. And they had information that a 28 foot barrier was needed.

Anyway, here's a link to the story, originally put out by AP. I did a search and could only find it on Huffington Post, but it's the same story word for word. Please don't judge it by the current source.

Second link is to Bing result of other similar stories from the same search.

Fukushima never bothered me. He was was a punk, but he was a couple of years behind me and I could just give him a look and he would run for his locker.

Fukkusumo, Fukushima's older brother, was a dfferent story. He was a couple of grades ahead of me and much bigger. It took a world class throw down before we came to terms.

So....No, Fukushima never bothered me, especially after I wouped his older brother's butt.

I worked with radioactive materials and the nuclear power industry for years, so I am not intimidated by the media-generated over statement of the danger. They have people expecting to glow in the dark.

It is the panic that bothers me. It is throwing the world economy and power industry all out of whack. Hysterical overreaction to a serious, but not end-of-the-world, problem will cause a lot more damage than the problem itself.

A voice of reason.

A voice of reason.

I absolutely agree that the fears are grossly overblown. Don't misunderstand my post. I'm simply trying to point out that precautions to easily foreseen hazards could have reduced the current peril to nothing.

From 1988 until I retired last summer I was involved in engineering automotive interior components. No big hazard there but still a potential for expensive failure. A number of situations ocurred where I or someone else expressed concerns over design problems that we saw which were ignored because of the cost involved to correct them. Many of these resulted in warranty claims and the warranty cost and the cost to correct the problem after start of production far exceeded the cost to correct in prototype. The fact is, in my experience, business never learns. They always take the path of least resistance and don't want to hear any talk of another path. Just get it into production and hope maybe nothing goes wrong.

That skewered a lot of Sacred Cows.

I dont have alot of "Sacred Cows" .. ( I thinking you ment Scared Cows ;) ) ..

Again..Im not Scared/Worried/Live in fear .. just Bothered..

Im Bothered by the Fact that over in Japan they have 4 Nuke "partial meltdowns" and its basically a Non-Issue..

Now if this kind of thing happened in NY..or lets say OH close to me/you/others Im sure you would be freaking out.

Its on the other side of the Planet...its over there...

Im more talking about the current situation in Japan !! It bothers me.. Not here in US ( allthough we are having Fallout indications ).

It bothers me to see readings that were taken Last Week..just posting today..

It bothers me to see 40km out of the plant site having High levels of radiation and " No evac is needed at this time".

It bothers me to have 4 reactors blow up and have a " everything is fine" .. now its "situation High Alert" but still " we are doing our best to contain "

I dunno folks.. it seems like those puppies are in/out of controll..

You do know that once fussion is started..you cant stop it.. well.. you can..but Ill leave that up to the Pros here.

Like I said.. Im not a Fear Monger..or suggesting that..

Level Headed YD.

Yeah, I already knew about the Chernobyl mis-reporting from a forward in a Crichton novel. What struck me this time was the Cancer research BS . . . Wow

I would say the mis-reporting for Chernobyl had more to do with it happening in a Soviet Block Country than anything else...

What BS are you refering to ?? ..

So are you on the side that "small amounts " of radioactive particles are a Non Issue ? Cant do anything ? ..

I would like some Links that back you up.. good or bad..

Some research says that the Chery killed ( indirectly through radi ) about 700k .. in 20 years ... ( or more ).

Again..Im not speaking about US fallout ( at this time ) .. its Japan that Im bothered about ( not scared ) ..

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

As I mentioned in post #18 it does not bother me and I will expound on it.

I have worked in a hot radio-active area, I have been through two separate military Nuclear certification courses and which studied and predicted fallout with related casualties.

Based on the jet stream and weather patterns the radiation will be carried away from Japan. If the levels go up around the main reactor area it will create a hot spot that will not be livable in our life times. The area will just be left alone until it is safe to cap off.

If the people in the US want to panic, they should read up on Radon levels, where found and frequency of being found right here at home.

When we purchased our home we had the well water tested and it came back with a low PPM count for uranium.

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

Reading the question and yes I am bothered by this nuclear power plant melt down. Not for my safety as I live right in the weather jet steam that,s coming from that part of the world. But from the potential poisoning of the area around the plant in question.

Nuclear power is a good clean power when it works but when things go wrong they really go wrong.
There must be a better way.

Yea if we ever get our hands on a UFO, maybe things will change.

Drill, baby, drill.

Actually, there's a lot of fuel available, and more being discovered all the time. At least that should tide us over till the UFO is found.

If man's activity could actually affect CO2 levels, it would be beneficial. CO2 is a critical plant nutrient.

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

If anyone has a better alternative for creating electrical energy lets hear about it. Even with it's ugly side which is evident in Japan there is not another method that is yet known to man that has less impact on the environment. Fossil fuels contribute to the greenhouse gases. Wind mills have environmental issues with wildlife, noise and disturbing natural air currents. Hydroelectric power is being attacked by those that want to restore our rivers. With all things there are risks...does that mean we get rid of automobiles? Every time we get in our cars to drive somewhere we are at a much greater risk of dying than even those people living in close proximity to the Fukushima plant.

They found a Natural gas pocket out in the ocean just north of the island but cant touch it due to the potential problems it may cause when the gas is extracted from under the water. Apparently every now and then a gas bubble comes up to the surface. Its apparently something to see when it happens.
