I do love Iboats..and have some kind of connection with you for sure..

So Im posting this ( not out of fear ) to ask if anyone out there has the same worries about the events happening in Japan fukashima nuclear power plants that I do..

Yes I could provide "sources" and "links" .. but im too tired of looking them up Again....

Sounds very scary if you ask me.. ( And I have researched ALOT ).

Just wondering..

YD.

Not good, but not the end of the world either. They'll bury it sooner or later, and eventually clean it up.

The prediction from Chernobyl was for a lot of casualties. I think there were actually less than 100 total. That was a graphite moderated reactor with no containment at all.

We can learn from it. There are probably places you don't want a nuclear reactor. One I can think of is near sea level and an active fault that could yield a world class earthquake at any time.

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

cheap energy sounds great...nuclear radiation sounds terrible of any kind....i dont care what anyone says, atomic bomb testing, nuclear powerplant meltdowns and radiation leaks end up in the water supply, everything living organism in this world depends on water...and honestly i think its super risky business. i understand that we are exposed to radiation all the time. but there are different types of particles...some worse the others. Nuclear radiation has the worse kind of particles. Im not against nuclear energy...but you would think before we used such a toxic solution to world energy problems...we could at least figure out an adequate way to dispose of nuclear waste other than burying it in salt for the next 1,000 years... I'm young and dont know everything about nuclear radiation...but i do think its very important to act in a manner that is responsible for future generations to come.

just my .02 cents. if you ask me nuclear radiation shouldnt even exist...at least not man made. Did cancer exist a million years ago? im pretty sure it didnt...

To be honest with you, nope, not in the least I grew up close to a plant, and worked around nukes for many years when I was in the army, as long as they continue to work on what is going on, the risk is very small, yes, there have been some exposures, but in the overall picture, it seems there is little risk of a full blown meltdown...the Japanese are petty darn good at what they do...so again, no I am not worried.

Yes, Cancer existed in our ancestors, there have been several fossil skeletons found that exhibited signs of cancerous growth...

Yes.

The Japanese Govt' appeared to have a "yea, we're getting things under control - don't worry, the high radiation is really not a problem" and the media has already moved on to whatever the next sensational story is. This response is expected.

We have them sending us radiation, but all the "experts" say it's only a small amount, no need to worry. What about two months from now, if they don't get things shut down? the news does not even report on it any more.

Nuclear reactor accidents never give a "warm fuzzy", but the scope of severe problems with multiple reactors, make things much more uncertain.

In the end, it really does not matter, since there is little we can do about it.

Have a nice evening. ;)

And just to add, I learned a very long time ago, to not worry much about things I can't control, and this certainly one of those situations, I have no say, no control..but will continue to hope they are making progress on the troubles they are having.

I have to agree with Jmartin on this what bizznes did they have putting that plant that close to those inherit danger zones? Someone said the Japanese are pretty good @what they do well obviuosly planning the location of this site must have slipped thier mind. I do think they will learn a big lesson form this once they recover thier manufacturing capabilities are gonn be in the crapper for some time

I'm with Mtboat. While you're doing research, check back on any perceived mega-threat. Bird Flu, Flesh eating viruses, Chernobyl, TMI, Global Cooling, Ozone layer, Killer bees, heck even AIDs. None has been what the hype said it would be.

Exceptions? Yes, but they are usually bad people doing really bad stuff, not some environmental or epidemic type thing. I would start listing the bad people/bad stuff examples, but I do not want this to go political, and I especially don't want to be the one who does it . . . ;)

It wasn't someone who said, they are good at what they do, it was me! If you have not been to Japan, you don't realize how limited they are in which they could put facilities of this nature, take into account how small Japan is and how many people they have to service.. Just like us in America, the Japanese demand good service, expect the lights to come on when the switch is flipped and just like us in America, every once in a while something goes wrong because of no fault of their own..you guys are over reacting to this, Chernobyl was actually quite a bit worse than this is so far and even 3 mile Island completely displaced a town and caused a lot of problems. As long as we as humans demand these services someone is going to do it..

As long as we demand, then we can only blame ourselves when a disaster happens, as as we all know, it is very difficult to predict everything coming together at the wrong time in perfect harmony..

Nope. I hate it happened, I hate it for all those that cant leave, and for all the issues that are yet to arise. I will pray for them all. "Nucular" power is still better than 99% of all alternatives. Environmentalists are going to find something wrong with every type of power production, and would rather us all live in the forest and eat raw nuts from organic trees...no campfires mind you...that is pollution. So until they find a way to harvest the power of a million gerbils running in wheels, or the static that is generated by scuffing our feet on carpet, nuclear is still the best bet. Heck...I wish they would bring the plant that is less than 100 miles from my house back to 100% online, and drop my power rates!

The only issue I fear is total decontainment into the pacific ocean, the two H bombs from the 40's have nothing on the amount of radiation and particles that will/can be released through a brake in the shroud and the movement of the fluids to the ocean.

Doesn't bother me at all. I was able to pop a bag of microwave popcorn by just going outside and sitting on the patio. Works for me!

There has been over 2000 nuclear bomb tests in water, in the air, on the ground and in the ground. Where did all that radiation go? If the environmentalists have their way and eliminate nuclear power plants we can forget about electric cars because there will be a shortage (and higher cost)of electrical power.

No...not at all. I worry more about Seattle's deal than Fukishima's.
Like a lot of guys have said, when you put it in perspective over history the real risks are next to zero.:)
You should probably be more concerned about being hit by a drunk (or texting) driver tomorrow than radiation.
My two bits...nothing more.:p

I worked with radioactive materials and the nuclear power industry for years, so I am not intimidated by the media-generated over statement of the danger. They have people expecting to glow in the dark.

It is the panic that bothers me. It is throwing the world economy and power industry all out of whack. Hysterical overreaction to a serious, but not end-of-the-world, problem will cause a lot more damage than the problem itself.

Yes Fukushima bothers me.
The over reaction to this problem will increase the cost of electric production. Has anyone ever sat down and figured how many wind turbines, or other mechanical means it would take to replace those nukes at Fukushima? And then figure the land needed to have "wind farms", and then figure production only when the wind blows. Here is a cost of electricity production picture, take your pick on what your future electricity will be derived from, and do the math.

Re: Does Fukushima bother you ?

I had the voluntary assignment to work in a Radiation hot area in the late 70's. I was in the Army and did some work on Eniwetok, Marshall Islands. Every worker was required to wear a dosimeter and we had many rules to follow. I did have a few personnel that refused the assignment due to the radiation (they were concerned about their future children they had planned) and were promptly sent back to the ship.

It was a surreal place and alleged at the time to be the "surface radiation hot spot" of the world (it was pre-Chernobyl). The United States abandoned ALL the engineer equipment we used since the salt environment and radiation exposure were considered unsafe. The personnel were monitored constantly and rotated out of the area when their personal exposure rates rose too fast and too high. The area was encased in concrete, sealed and abandoned as part of the Atoll Rehabilitation Project. https://marshallislands.llnl.gov/enewetak.php There were 43 "tests" performed in this area.

My short answer...... No the scare does not bother me.

Cofe. I think the DOE projected cost table you published is just digitized pipe dream.

One thing about wind energy that seems to be overlooked is the high cost of maintenance. Just look around at existing projects, and you see lots of mills standing still, or even complete projects abandoned. Without huge injected (public) money they wouldn't even exist to start with.
