Re: Do you keep "cash" in your home?

In my case, I only keep $1000 cash on hand in my home and petty cash in our pockets. That should be enough money to feed my family and purchase fuel for a month in the event of an emergency (came in handy when power was out in my county for two weeks during Sandy). If I need more than that, I would get cash from my national FDIC bank. If cash wasn't available for a month within driving distance from a national FDIC bank, I am sure I would have more pressing concerns than locating cash. I have more trouble keeping the Mrs out of the reserve than I do potential intruders.

My credit union rounds up every transaction on my debit card to the next dollar. At the end of the day that extra change is deposited into a special savings account that pays 5%. I have about 700$ in that account now and never missed the extra change.
