I have had my local Honda shop replace my water pump in the past but want to give it a try because I heard it’s fairly easy. Any tips for a first timer on doing this job?
thanks in advance

Get a shop manual and read it, and watch a video on YouTube. Grease all of the bolts when you put it back together. Which Honda do you have? I've got a 99' BF50 (50HP) and have changed the impeller many times and it is easy.

Anything that might look like a Phillips head screw, probably isn't. Invest in a good set of JIS screw drivers, so you aren't chewing them up so badly, that eventually your unable to remove them at all. This is one of the biggest rookie mechanic mistakes I see.

This is an excellent point, many people probably don't even know that there is a difference between philips and JIS, but the fit is for sure different. The proper bit fits very tight. If there is a dot on the screw, it is most likely JIS. But you cannot assume it is not JIS if there is no dot. More info:

Wow!
I never heard of this.
I thank you for that very informative article.
I guess that's why I've encountered "phillips head" screws that none of my screwdrivers would properly fit.
You never stop learning!
And the comments at the bottom made me laugh because I'm also 63!!!!!
Crazy....right?

When I see someone using a Phillips on a JIS screw, I want to whip them with spaghetti noodles.

Give us a break, I didn't know about JIS until yesterday! Thanks to Matt, I learned something new.
Maybe because I never owned any Japanese motors.
I don't think any of my Fords, Chevys or Pontiacs had them. I don't think my Mercruiser/Alpha has them, or does it?
No disrespect, enlighten me...
