Know anyone who sleeps with their eyes open?

My 11 year old daughter does. Pretty scary to see. She is dead asleep, fully off in la-la land, etc, but her eyes are 2/3 open. Almost fully open, but not quite. She used to sleep with her eyes closed, but the last year or so her eyes are open. The eye lid only comes down to the top of the colored part of the eye. She has dark, dark, dark brown eyes, so its hard to discern the color from the black iris. In low light, she has some of the spookiest eyes I have ever seen. She can give a look that will make you believe in the living dead. No kidding. And this is my own flesh and blood!!!!!

Anyway, her eyes light up nicely to a medium brown when the sun hits them right. And then they are the prettiest chocolate brown eyes going.

But darn, those eyes will give you a start when she is asleep. Especially creepy when she is watching a movie with me, and I look over and she appears to be watching, but is actually asleep. I have talked to her through entire commercial breaks only to find out she is asleep when I don't get a response. LOL!!!

Anyone else know of "eyes wide asleep" syndrome?

Re: Dead Asleep, Eyes Wide Open

I went n a little trip over the weekend. Met some friends for a rocket launch. We got 2 hotel rooms. Him and his wife stayed in one room , myself and their 12 year old son shared the other. we went out drinking, when I got back to the room turned the light on, his son was dead asleep EYES WIDE OPEN. Freakiest thing I had ever seen. I had to wait a few seconds to make sure he was breathing...

Of course the dozen or so drinks didn't help.. but for a seconds I thought he was dead..

the next morning I mentioned it to his dad, he said :yeah he does that a lot... freaks me out too"

Damn! I probably would have shot first and asked questions later. Must be a real shock when the kids are not your own so you know they will not suck your blood when you fall asleep..... :D

Yeah....... Uhhh..... Oh yeah...... my daughter is pretty, and very "vivacious" so all the boys want to play with her. Wife and I agree she is going to be a hand full if not worse when she is 16 or more. Especially knowing what her personality is now, and how she responds to our athority now. I dread the day.... But I am working on damage control now. Like paying undivided attention to the times she want to tell us something important, or wants to share what she did or wants to do. Sounds easy, sounds simple? Don't you believe it. Girls are a strange animal...... :D:D:D

yeah that's the quote of the year....

Gotta love them though.

I have 5 daughters (ok between me and my wife we have 5 daughters) 2 of them are at that age... so I feel for you. The boys show up. I go in the living room and clean my guns... works every time..

alright back to the original topic.

A subordinate in Iraq did that all the time. First time it really freaked me out. He was on guard duty (ECP) and standing there in the road, weapon at the ready, locked and loaded - dead asleep - with his eyes wide open. Had to look real close to know if he was awake. Quite a skill. Useful for change of command ceremonies, political speeches, etc. What a trip...

She'll be fine.

Re: Dead Asleep, Eyes Wide Open

Sometimes sleep issues are indeed downright creepy.

My sister used to sleepwalk. One night when I was about 11 and she was 9 she came into my room shook me violently awake and asked, "Where are you!? Where are you!?" Eyes wide open, face a foot from mine.

Before I could respond, she calmly straightened up, turned and left. She professed absolutely no memory of it the next morning. Still gives me the creeping willies to remember it all these years later.

In university my room mate and I were headed back to campus after a weekend in the big city. I was driving and he had fallen asleep in the front passenger seat. All was calm and I was motoring along about midnight when all of a sudden he sits bolt upright, screams, reaches over and grabs the wheel yanking it hard to the right.

We served from the outside lane to the shoulder, fishtailing wildly all the while he's got this deathgrip on the wheel and he's screaming his bloody head off. It was raining so I don't know if that helped us stay upright or made the skidding worse, but I got us stopped, thankfully shiny side up. By then he was slumped in his seat shaking and panting.

Turns out he was having a dream that I fell asleep at the wheel, which in his dream he just noticed as we were heading for the ditch. Oh man - we talked about that for years afterwards, shaking our heads over the irony. Sleeping passenger causes accident becuase he was dreaming about being in an accident....

Interesting thing about sleep walking and the like... Your body will switch off the connection to mussels so that dream state does not make you run in your sleep. That disconnect works really well for most people, and it can be seen as "twitching" and other stiff jerky movements during the night while dreaming.

But for some people, the suppression just does not work, and they have full control of the body while sleeping. A very dangerous situation. Can just be the classic sleep walking, to horrific tragedies like slashing and other stabbing, cutting activities. (this is why I always stab my enemies to death during the night so i can claim it was sleep walking):D:D

Body control during sleep is a very interesting topic. Worth reading about.

If she dosn't blink while sleeping, I would mention this to your pediatrician. I would think there could be some issues with her eyes not being mositened occassionally.

BTW....

"Jeepers Creepers, where'd you get those peepers... "

If you haven't seen the original "Jeepers Creepers" movie, it is well worth renting, especially if you like Si-Fi movies. And yes, they do play that song in the movie. Got to watch the whole thing to hear it. Came out in 2001. A really good movie for a low budget "scare" movie. I especially like the truck the "bad guy" drives.

There was a follow up second movie that was every bit as good as the first. Interesting that the producers were stuck with the original premise that the "bad guy" only shows up ever 20 or 30 years (I forget the details) so they were having a hard time deciding how things will look 20 or so years from now. To get past the whole time line problem, they decided to make the second movie start the same evening where the first film ended. Cool, no?

Re: Dead Asleep, Eyes Wide Open

I found out some years back that I sleep with my eyes open after a good night of drinking and falling asleep with my contacts in! Talk about pain in the morning followed by a nice trip to the eye doctor. Wife says it freaks her out sometimes.
