oops! your just as nutty in the head as I am... even though you painted a brutal picture for us all, it just shows that your as passionate with this stuff as I am... of course, and all these people that are willing to dive in head first with these big projects, large or small. oops! ran out of the shower to reply on a boating forum because of his impulsive boating passion drove him to it. But this is the "good" type of insane. tooo funny.

Hopefully when we get sent to rubber rooms, you will have the cell next to mine. As we wear our helmets during arts and crafts time we can draw our boat construction schematics, engine layout, hardware, paint jobs...

Without the dreamers, there is no innovation. Without the innovation, we would be living like the flintstones. ...and I sure don't remember the flintstones having boats.

BTW, southern Ontario, close to Niagara falls... snow storm tonight... sux, but fun to drive in :D

Willyclay,
The Rover V8 that weighs just a bit over 300LB (minus all the regular automotive peripherals) would sound like an excellent choice. Although parts are not so popular and I just can't see it being the correct choice for me because of the pressed liners... It's just not an engine that likes hanging out at high rpm's for long periods of time. But yes, I was TOTALLY thinking of that motor

In fact, last year I was thinking of giving my baby a cummins diesel so I could use the Rover motor for the boat... (again, slightly partial ;))

Gawd, you guys are mind readers :D

Ataraxia, are you planning on increasing the height of the transom on the boat, or keep what is there? I never realized how big the splashwell on some of those Crestliners was!

I just got a summons from the city for having 3 boats in my yard, gotta go see the man about a boat tomorrow morning :sigh: I hope you have a good place to work on this project, I'm excited to see your progress also. The idea of the VR6 is awesome....great motor. It would have really been something if you could somehow have snagged a W8 :D, but that VR6 is a nice little screamer. I love the idea of taking something and being creative with it, particularly if you have the ability and resources. I'd thought of doing the same with my Glastron, but I'll have enough just to get the boat back into shape enough to float again, so I'm going to go with the big ol gas guzzling outboard.

Thanks for the comments guys...

Well opps!, you better let me know when your in my neck of the woods. March is still going to be cold here, but so is the beer. ;)

Hey Red, The transom will be raised and that tubby*** splashwell will be removed. Only a little engine box will remain. Batteries and fuel tank will be distributed forward of the engine under the floor for low center of gravity.

...and sorry to hear about that summons. I had a similar problem once, but with a car. What is this world coming to when a man can't have 3 boats on his yard??? Wait! Screw the city, build a huge pool/pond on your yard, and dock yer boats in it. see, problem solved :D

You do realize that a 200 HP ALpha (4.3LX V6 motor) weighs 1100# versus the 400# or less of your V4? For 40# more you could get a 200HP outboard, and really improve performance. I also wonder how you will have more room in that boat with the I/O, since you will need a full motor cover. On a larger boat you can put the i/O under the deck.

I'd be very interested in the custom cooling set up and manifolds.
I've had a few ideas for using various other non marine engines in place of several older options. Doing so and saving some weight at the same time sound's like a plan to me for sure.

I'm drumming up this older thread because I was thinking about this project and wanted to know the answer to one or two simple questions ( sure! ).

What kind of engine management are you going to use, and if it's something from the original car, how do you plan to tackle the tasks of O2 sensors, wheel speed sensors and the like?

Beyond that, there is the issue of making it into a "marine" engine, keeping it up to marine standards for spark control, etc.

Seems like it'll be more of an engineering marvel than just simply finding a way to mate the engine to an outdrive.

Was hoping he'd get an email thread subscription and show up with an update...mebee a PM would awaken him :D

I loved the idea of that VW motor going in a boat, I'd just like to find out what kinds of snags and pitfalls he's run up against so far. I'm still at the point that I could easily convert my inboard to an outboard if I felt the need.

i/o to ob would be easy.....ob to i/o would be hard...(lots a work)

the really intersting thing is him fabbing all the nessary parts to make the untried vw work...and then to marinize it....

hope he can take the time needed to make headway

I agree, cut the transom down, add a splashwell after replacing the transom and repairing the hole where the outdrive was would be pretty easy. I guess it would end up depending on what kind of transom you were planning on running the outdrive through. I suppose one could cut out the splashwell and design a big ol' inboard box and hinge it off the transom.

Meh, what do I know....I really gotta get a grinder so I can get to work on MY boat!

850 for a 4.3L and Alpha . . .

Since one "cannot argue with the numbers" I thought I'd point out that a newer 2 Cycle will get as good or better fuel economy than a 4 cycle I/O. I/Os lose about 30 bhp through the gear, which translates to about 10% efficienc loss as compared to the Flywheel. Lost power is lost fuel . . .

Torque is not that important, especially with the high numerical gear ratio you will need to utilize the higher RPM (multiplies torque). And how does anyone know how reliable a 2.8 VW engine with a blower will be?

I like this project, sounds like fun, but there is no guaranteed reliability here, nor is there an inherent fuel efficiency gain. In fact, due to weight, it might be worse. Oh, be aware, 100+ bhp per liter is actually a very high performance package. To compare, that would be 600+ from a 5.7

Oh, oh, there is a high RPM, blown, V6, 4 cycle, marine engine available now. It is called a Mercury Verado and it would bolt to your transom . . . It would be a lot of $ . . .

Again, not trying to be a wet blanket here at all, but I agree, "cannot argue with the numbers." I will venture a guess that the VR6 with a blower will run about 400 or so lbs. by itself, so with the Alpha etc. I am guessing also at around 650 all up. Is this the configuration you are considering?
