Re: Crashed

Does anybody know how they get fuel for them? I know for a fact that they ran on leaded fuel. Is that still being manufactured?

Re: Crashed

Maybe they modified them somehow or treat the gas so they can still run leaded fuel, but my guess would be they modified them to run on unleaded.

Re: Crashed

You think he runs synthetic oil in those old Pratt and Whitneys? I've heard that's the best thing to run in your WWII bomber to reduce carbon build up. What pitch props you think he's running? You think it's stainless?

Re: Crashed

I understand that alot of WWII equipment ran on synthetic oils. Especially German equipment. Performed much better in cold weather. Not so sure about ours, but I think we used it too.

Re: Crashed

I remember the summer of '44. Spent it with my Dad in NJ.

One day about a dozen B-17s buzzed the town of Montclair during a war bond drive... .came over at about 500' and rattled the china on the dinnertable.

What a glorious sight for an 8-year old who kept a map of the world on his bedroom wall and updated the progress of the war every evening after the world news!

You could be correct, SBN, but my recollection was that it appeared first on the "F", along with the navigator's sextant blister in front of the pilot's windshield.

Re: Crashed

Most POL manaufacturers still manufacture various grades of leaded aviation gasolene... Avgas. 100LL (100 octane Low Lead is the most common, but there's more specialist Avgases for different requirements up to 130 Octane with heaps of lead). Here in Aus, Avgas is cheaper than Mogas (Automotive gasolene). And Jet A-1 (Aviation kerosene for jet turbine engines) is cheaper still. :D

That's what my Dad flew out of Polebrook, England. He was in the 351st Bomb Group, 510th Squadron flying "Nobody's Darlin" & later "Black Magic".

Another of his shipmates just died 2 weeks ago so there are only three of the ten of them left. Great heroes in a great aircraft.

JB, Is correct. A B-17-F.

I saw one flying over the CA coast last fall and heard on the radio that it had to ditch at a local airfield near San Clemente.

:( Ii seems it developed problems one hour into a shakedown flight after a full resto.

I see allot of stuff like that here. I'm about five miles away from the AZ chapter of the Confederate Airforce. They have a great museum here. If anyone ever visits Phoenix/Mesa area, it is a must see.

Re: Crashed

Well the only reason I mentioned fuel was, we had one here a few years ago. The boys and I went to check it out and they were charging admittance to get aboard to look-see. The reason for the charge was to help with the fuel costs. According to the pilot, those P&W's burned up about $1500.00 worth of fuel just to taxi and take off.

I would have rather been a grunt sleeping in the frozen mud than to be a crew member on one of those. You had to have some iron kahonees to fly the missions they flew over Germany and France. Not to mention the way the Nazi's treated downed Flyboys.

This plane is less than a mile from my house. I drive by it several times a week. I have not seen it in the air yet, but my wife has heard it buzzing our house.....

Liberty Bell B-17

Re: Crashed

Appears to be the same plane. WOW 80,000 man hours to restore.

I got ya all beat... here in Ohio, we have the United States Air Force Museum down at Wright-Patterson AFB. Go there at least once a year. What a collection. One of the neatest places I know.

Even neater than BASS-PRO SHOPS or CABELLAS.
